Women Men

The women's ice hockey tournament at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi took place from February 8 to 20 - just like the Vancouver Games - with eight national teams. Most of the games were played in the Schaiba ice arena (Russian: Ледовая арена "Шайба" ), which holds 7,000 spectators. The games for the gold and bronze medal, however, took place in the 12,000-seat Bolshoi Ice Palace (Russian: Большой ледовый дворец, "Большой", literally "Great Ice Palace"). Both stadiums are located in the Sochi Olympic Park .

Canada defended the title for the third time in a row with a 3-2 final win in extra time over the USA . Switzerland secured third place .

qualification

The first six nations of the IIHF world rankings qualified for the tournament after the 2012 World Cup and two other participants who were played in qualifying tournaments.

The following qualified six teams in the IIHF world rankings 2012:

The eight teams of the Olympic ice hockey tournament were divided into two groups of four teams each in the preliminary round. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams in the IIHF world rankings after the 2012 World Cup according to the following key:

The teams in places 1 to 4 of the world rankings are in group A, places 5 to 6 in group B. Group B is supplemented by the two winners of the qualification groups.

Group A Group B
CanadaCanada Canada (1) SwedenSweden Sweden (5)
United StatesUnited States USA (2) RussiaRussia Russia (6)
FinlandFinland Finland (3) GermanyGermany Germany (8)
SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland (4) JapanJapan Japan (11)

Within the groups, the teams initially play according to the everyone-against-everyone mode , so that each team initially plays three games. The first two of the higher placed Group A qualify directly for the semi-finals, while the third and fourth placed in Group A and the two first placed in Group B play against each other in the quarter-finals. The winners of the semi-finals then compete in the final for the gold and silver medal and the losers in the semi-finals in the third place for the bronze medal. The losers of the two quarter-finals play with the bottom two of the group B for places 5 to 8.
