Michelle "Shelly" Picard (born May 27, 1993 in Fall River , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey player who has been playing for the Metropolitan Riveters in the National Women's Hockey League since the summer of 2016 on the position of defender . Picard has been a member of the United States women's national ice hockey team since 2010 and is multiple world champion.

Career

Picard attended Noble & Greenough School in Dedham , Massachusetts between 2007 and 2011 during her high school years . During this time she took part with the U18 team of the US Ice Hockey Association USA Hockey in 2010 and 2011 in the U18 World Junior Championship. There she won the silver medal with the team in 2010, and finally the world championship title the following year. During the tournament, the defender achieved the best plus / minus rating of all players.

Following this success, it drew Picard course of their studies in archeology at the Harvard University , them with their ice hockey team in the ECAC Hockey , a Division in the game operation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , was active. In the winter of 2010, the then 18-year-old was appointed to the women's national ice hockey team of the United States for the first time and made her debut at the 4 Nations Cup 2010 . With the 2012 World Cup , she played her first major international tournament a year and a half after her debut in the US team. There she won the silver medal with the team. From the 2013 World Cup in the following spring, she finally came back with the world title. The defensive player was then recruited by USA Hockey in the summer of 2013 so that she could prepare for the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi . Picard returned from the Olympic Games with the silver medal. For this she had interrupted her studies for a year. She finally finished her studies at Harvard in the summer of 2016 and had so far won two other world championships in the 2015 and 2016 world championships. In addition, she had won the ECAC division title with the university in 2015.

After completing her studies, the defender switched to the professional field and joined the New York Riveters from the National Women's Hockey League for the 2016/17 season . At the end of her rookie season , Picard was one of four players to receive the NWHL Foundation Award . In the following game year 2017/18 she repeated winning this award. She was also invited to the NWHL All-Star Game. Finally, the successful season of was crowned by winning Isobel Cup , to the now in Metropolitan Riveters renamed franchise won the first time.
