The 2016/17 season was the second season of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), the top division in American women's ice hockey . The season began on October 7, 2016 with the first game of the regular season and ended on March 19, 2017 with the final game for the Isobel Cup . The Buffalo Beauts secured this in the final against the Boston Pride . A total of four teams took part in the game.
Mode and participants
The four teams - namely the Boston Pride , Buffalo Beauts , Connecticut Whale and New York Riveters - first played a six-fold round in the regular season , so that each team played 18 games. A total of 36 games were played during the season.
The ranking of the regular season resulted in the seeding list for the subsequent play-offs , in which the first placed met the fourth placed in the table. The next series contested the second and third place. In contrast to last year, the teams played the play-offs in a knockout round.
NWHL Draft
The second Entry Draft of the NWHL took place on June 18, 2016 in Brooklyn . The order of the draft was determined by the result of the regular season of the previous year . The New York Riveters as the lowest point team in the preseason selected the American Kelsey Koelzer from Princeton University for the first overall place . As in the previous year, a total of 20 players were drafted in five rounds.

Isobel Cup Playoffs
The playoffs for the Isobel Cup began on March 16, 2017 with the two semi-finals. This was followed by the final of the Isobel Cup on March 19, which the Buffalo Beauts won in a re- edition of the previous year's final against the Boston Pride .

NWHL All Star Game
The second NWHL All-Star Game took place on February 12, 2017 at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Pittsburgh . The encounter was completed over two halves of 25 minutes each. There was also a skills competition .
The teams were put together based on a fantasy draft by the players Amanda Kessel and Kelley Steadman .

The Kessel team defeated the Steadman team after 50 minutes of play with 11:10. As most valuable player was Amanda Kessel excellent.
