Amanda Kessel (born August 28, 1991 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Metropolitan Riveters of the National Women's Hockey League since May 2016 . Kessel has been a member of the United States women's national ice hockey team since 2010 and is multiple world and Olympic champion. Her older brothers Phil and Blake are also professional ice hockey players.

Career

Kessel played at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s during her high school years and took part in the U18 World Junior Championships in 2008 and 2009 . The Americans won the gold medal in both tournaments, with Kessel as the best player on the team. After taking third place in the scorer ranking in 2008 with eleven scorer points , she led the tournament in this category in 2009. In addition, she was the best striker in the World Cup and the best template provider and had the best plus / minus statistics.

In the summer of 2010, the attacker moved to the University of Minnesota , where she was on the university's ice hockey team for the next six years. In 2012 and 2013, she led the Golden Gophers to win the national college championship. After the 2012/13 season she received the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award for best college player in the United States for her achievements . At this time, Kessel also found his way into the US national team . With the same she was able to win the silver medal at the 2012 World Cup and a year later the gold medal. For the 2013/14 season she left the university team in Minnesota for a year in order to be able to prepare intensively for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi in the US Hockey Association USA Hockey . The team was unable to win the Olympic title again after a final defeat against Canada, but also in the fourth attempt in a row, so Kessel had to console himself with the silver medal.

The following season 2014/15 sat the striker completely due to the aftermath of a concussion , which meant that she could not participate in Minnesota's third national title win or the United States' world championship. The American only returned to the ice in February 2016 and ended the season at the University of Minnesota with her third personal title win at national level. She then joined the New York Riveters from the National Women's Hockey League as a free agent . After finishing the 2016/17 season there, she won her second world title with the national team as part of the 2017 World Cup. As she had done four years earlier, she spent the 2017/18 season in the US association to prepare for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . There she finally won Olympic gold.
