The 2019 Women's Ice Hockey World Championship was the 22nd edition of this competition by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. A total of 39 national teams took part in the six tournaments of the top division, divisions I and II and the qualification for division II B between January 13 and April 14, 2019 .

The United States' team , who beat Finland 2-1 in the shootout in the final, won the world championship for the ninth time and for the fifth time in a row . It was the first time in the history of the Women's World Cup that the United States and Canada , which had to be content with bronze , did not face each other in the final. The German team finished in seventh place, while Switzerland was in fifth place. The team from Austria once again missed promotion to the top division with fourth place in Group A of Division I.

The top division of the world championship took place from April 4 to 14, 2019 in the Finnish city of Espoo . The game was played in the two halls of the Espoo Metro Areena with 6,982 seats (arena) and 500 seats (hall II). A total of 51,247 spectators attended the 29 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 1,767 per game.

Ten national teams took part in the tournament and played in two performance-based groups of five teams each. The group classification was based on the current IIHF world rankings after the 2018 World Cup :

Group A Group B
United StatesUnited States USA (1) SwedenSweden Sweden (6)
CanadaCanada Canada (2) JapanJapan Japan (7)
FinlandFinland Finland (3) GermanyGermany Germany (8)
RussiaRussia Russia (4) Czech RepublicCzech Republic Czech Republic (9)
SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland (5) FranceFrance France (10)

Due to the restructuring of the tournament and the associated division into two performance-based groups, there were no surprising results in the preliminary round. In Group B, the newly promoted Czech Republic, Germany and Japan qualified for the quarter-finals, where they had no chance against the United States, Canada and Finland. In addition to France, the Swedish team was relegated to Division I for the first time in World Cup history.

In addition to the three top nations, Russia also qualified for the semi-finals, which defeated Switzerland in the quarter-finals. While the USA secured their 19th finals in a row with a clear victory over Russia, hosts Finland caused a surprise by defeating Canada. For the first time in World Cup history, the final was not USA versus Canada. In the final, the United States won 2-1 in the penalty shootout . The Finns were denied the alleged winning goal by Petra Nieminen in extra time after an interruption lasting several minutes because of a video evidence decision. Annie Pankowski scored the decisive goal for the Americans .

mode

With the two-year increase from eight to ten participating teams, the tournament was held in a new mode for the first time. The ten participants were divided into two performance-graded groups of five teams. All teams initially played four games, after which all five teams in Group A and the three best-scoring teams in Group B qualified for the quarter-finals after the preliminary round. The last two teams in Group B were relegated to Division IA.

The teams in the quarterfinals each played a qualifying game for participation in the semi-finals. The winners of the two semi-finals qualified for the final. The fourth and fifth in Group B also played a placement game.

The Group A tournament of Division I was held from April 7th to 13th, 2019 in the Hungarian capital Budapest . The games took place in the Jégpalota with a capacity of 2,048 . A total of 7,527 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 501 per game.

In the - as in the previous year - high-performance Group A of Division I, four of the six teams had the chance to land on one of the first two places in the table before the final day, and thus the chance to move up to the top division. All four teams faced each other in direct duels on the last day of the match. While the Hungarians, trained by Pat Cortina , had the best starting position with ten points, the Danes were the only one of the four teams that could no longer advance on their own. With six points they were three points behind the Norwegians who were in second place. After the 4-0 win in the game against the Scandinavians, they were dependent on a win by the hosts in the regular 60 minutes so that Austria would not make it through the direct comparison if they were tied. In the end, Hungary just won 2: 1 and thus secured their first promotion to the top division. Denmark rose to the top group for the first time since the 1992 World Cup .

The descent of the Italians, who only rose last year, was sealed on the penultimate day of the tournament. The southern Europeans lost all five games and only scored three goals. Slovakia took fifth place.

The Group B tournament of Division I was held from April 6 to 12, 2019 in Beijing , the capital of the People's Republic of China . The games took place in the Shougang ice arena with a capacity of 6,000 . A total of 17,980 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 1,198 per game.

With five wins from just as many games, the newcomers Netherlands achieved their first promotion to Group A of Division I with a surprisingly confident mastery. They sat down against the former World Cup participants from Kazakhstan and the People's Republic of China, as well as last year's Olympic participant from South Korea . With their victory over South Korea on the first day of play, the Dutch laid the foundation for their later promotion. Due to the results of the competition, however, they were not allowed to lose the direct duel against Poland on the final day. With the narrow 2-0 win, they finally secured the ticket for the A group. On the last day of the tournament, the team from South Korea, which displaced Poland, placed second.

The tournament was disappointing for the People's Republic of China and Kazakhstan, who had to be content with fourth and fifth place. The Kazakh women managed to avoid relegation to Division II A by winning the direct duel on the final day. This was accepted by the Latvians, who for the first time since 2009 were relegated to Division II, which was still single-track at the time.

The Group A tournament of Division II was held from April 2 to 8, 2019 in Dumfries , Scotland . The games took place in the 1,000-seat Dumfries Ice Bowl . A total of 5,501 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 366 per game.

The group A was with the exception of the later relegated Australia as balanced and so none of the teams could win more than three games in regular time. Ultimately, the team from Slovenia prevailed, after three fifth places in a row of promotion from Group B in 2015 , they collected the most points at the end of the tournament and were able to celebrate their first promotion to Division I. Ultimately, the decisive factor was the 4-2 victory on the second day of the tournament over the host Britons who, despite their ambitions, had to be content with second place. The Slovenians also benefited from their storm series around Pia Pren , Sara Confidenti and 15-year-old Julija Blazinšek , who was responsible for 20 of the 24 Slovenian tournament goals . The surprisingly strong newcomer Spain took third place in the group. The relegation of Australia after three years of membership in the group was already sealed after the tenth tournament game on the penultimate matchday due to the results.

The tournament of Group B of Division II was held from April 1 to 7, 2019 in the Romanian city of Brașov . The games took place in the Patinoarul Olimpic with a capacity of 1,584 . A total of 1,275 spectators attended the 15 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 85 per game.

After the team from the Republic of China from the island of Taiwan last year still lagged behind the later promoted Spain, this year the Asians managed the sovereign and first-time promotion to Group A of Division II. Behind them were the teams from New Zealand and Iceland, which on the last day of the match still had a chance of winning the tournament thanks to a direct duel against the Republic of China. Behind it a three-way battle for relegation also developed. The newly promoted Croatia managed to stay in the league, while the host Romanians took last place in the group for the third year in a row. After they did not have to relegate in the previous two years due to the increase in the top division, they have now relegated to qualifying for Division IIB after three years.
