The women's ice hockey world championships in 2004 were held in four tournaments between March 14th and April 6th, in which a total of 27 teams took part. The eighth edition of the top division took place from March 30th to April 6th, 2004 in the Canadian cities of Halifax and Dartmouth .
The Canadian women's national ice hockey team became world champions, ahead of the United States and Finland . For Canada it was the eighth title win at the eighth World Cup. However, there was the first World Cup defeat for the Canadians against the USA in the preliminary round.

From March 30th to April 6th, 2004 , the top division of the Women's World Championship was held in Halifax and Dartmouth , Canada. The game was played at the Halifax Metro Center and the Dartmouth Sportsplex . Due to the World Cup that was canceled last year , nine teams took part in this tournament this year.

The game was played in three preliminary round groups A – C. The first in the preliminary round played the finalists in qualifying round D, the second in the preliminary round fought for the second participant in the game for third place (against the third in qualifying round D) and in qualifying round F the third in the preliminary round played against relegation and for placement. Since the World Cup group was to be reduced to eight teams again, there were two relegated teams with only one promoted team this year.
