Emma Kristiina Terho , b. Laaksonen , (born December 17, 1981 in Washington, DC , USA ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Espoo Blues in the Naisten SM-sarja on the position of defender for many years .
Career
Emma Terho began her career in 1996 with the Espoo Blues and finished third with her team in 1997 and 1998. In 1999 she won her first Finnish championship title with her team .
College ice hockey
In 2000 she decided to move to North America and studied between 2000 and 2004 at Ohio State University . At the same time she played for the Buckeyes , the university 's women's ice hockey team, in the WCHA , a league of the NCAA . In 2002 she was elected to the All America team for her outstanding playing style and nominated for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award . Her part in building the women's ice hockey program at Ohio State University was honored with a ceremony in October 2008, with her # 3 jersey number banned from the university.
Finnish championships with Espoo Blues
After studying at university, she returned to Finland, where she has lived in Espoo with her husband and a son since then . First she played for the Blues again and was captain of the team in the 2006/07 season. In 2005 and 2007 she won another championship title with the Blues, while the team took third place in 2006. During the 2007/08 season she played for SKIF Nizhny Novgorod in the Russian women's championship and won the Russian championship with SKIF at the end of the season . She then returned to Espoo and won two more championship titles with the Blues in 2009 and 2013. During the 2011/12 season she temporarily retired from active sport, but returned to the ice during the play-offs.
In 2015 she ended her career and became general manager of the women's team at the Blues. After the club's withdrawal from the men's Liiga and women's league for financial reasons , Terho played a few games in SM sarja for the successor club Espoo United in the 2016/17 season .
International
After playing for Finland's U22 women between 1995 and 1997, Emma Terho was nominated for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and won the bronze medal as the youngest player on the Finnish national team (16 years and 54 days). This also made her the youngest ever Finnish Olympic medalist.
In 2000 she won the bronze medal at the world championships and repeated this success in the world championships in 2004 , 2008 and 2009 . She also took part in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , 2006 in Turin and 2010 in Vancouver , where she won another bronze medal in 2010.
When Air Canada Cup in 2008 , the World Championships in 2008 and 2009 and the 2010 Winter Games, she was captain of the national team. In the early 2010s, Emma Terho was a member of the Finnish Olympic Committee.
IOC membership
At the 2018 Olympic Winter Games , Terho was elected to the Athletes' Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for eight years and is therefore also a full IOC member .
