The women's ice hockey tournament at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin was held from February 11th to 20th - just like the Games in Salt Lake City - with eight national teams. The women played the preliminary round both in the Palasport Olimpico with a capacity of 12,350 and in the Torino Esposizioni with a capacity of 4,320. The final round took place exclusively in the Palasport Olimpico, while the other placement games were played in the Torino Esposizioni. A total of eleven of the 20 games took place at the Palasport Olimpico.

Canada defended their first Olympic title four years ago in Salt Lake City by beating Sweden 4-1 in the final . It was also the first time in the history of women's ice hockey that the final of an Olympic ice hockey tournament or a world championship was not played between Canada and the USA . The Americans, who lost to the Swedes in the semi-finals, secured third place and thus bronze.

qualification

The first four nations of the IIHF world rankings were automatically qualified for the tournament after the 2004 World Cup, as well as the host nation. Another three participants were played in qualifying tournaments.

Automatically eligible as a host:

The eight teams of the Olympic ice hockey tournament were divided into two groups of four teams each in the preliminary round. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams in the IIHF world rankings after the 2004 World Cup according to the following key:

Group A Group B
CanadaCanada Canada (1) United StatesUnited States USA (2)
SwedenSweden Sweden (4) FinlandFinland Finland (3)
RussiaRussia Russia (5) GermanyGermany Germany (6)
ItalyItaly Italy (17) SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland (8)

Within the groups, the teams initially played according to the everyone-versus-everyone mode , so that each team initially played three games. The first two of the group played the semi-finals crosswise - that is, winner A against runner-up B and winner B against runner-up A - and the winners advanced to the final. The losers in the semi-finals played the bronze medal. The teams in ranks 3 and 4 of the preliminary round played a placement round, whereby they also played crosswise first, the winners of these games then played for place 5, the losers for place 7.
