meaning
The world rankings are particularly important for qualifying for the Olympic ice hockey tournaments for men and women . In the men's category, in addition to the host, the eight best nations in the world rankings will qualify for the 2014 Olympic tournament directly after the 2012 World Cup . The qualification for the other three places is based on the world rankings, for example the nations in the world rankings 10 to 18 are placed for the last qualifying tournaments, with the nations in places 10 to 12 having home rights. In the women's category, the six best nations in the ranking will qualify for the 2014 Olympics after the 2012 World Cup; for the qualifying tournaments, the classification is also based on the 2012 world ranking.
At the men's world championship, the two preliminary round groups are also filled according to the world rankings. The following key is used:
Group A | Group B |
---|---|
1 | 2 |
4th | 3 |
5 | 6th |
8th | 7th |
9 | 10 |
12 | 11 |
13 | 14th |
16 | 15th |
Since the Olympic ice hockey tournament is generally played with three preliminary round groups, the following key is used:
Group A | Group B | Group C |
---|---|---|
1 | 2 | 3 |
6th | 5 | 4th |
7th | 8th | 9 |
12 | 11 | 10 |
Award of points
The men's world rankings include the results of the last Olympic ice hockey tournament and the last four ice hockey world championships . Since there is no World Cup for women in the Olympic year, the number of World Championships included in the evaluation is three. The points of the current year count in full, the evaluation of the previous years decreases by 25 percentage points per year.
The world ranking list points are awarded according to the world championship placement, with the world champion receiving 1200 points and usually a difference of 20 points between the placements. In the A-World Cup, however, there are larger steps of 40 points between first, second and third place and between fourth and fifth place. For men, there is another 40-point step between eighth and ninth place, as a reward for the play-off participants. For women, there is also a 40-point step between eighth and ninth place, i.e. the participants in the A-World Cup and Division I. The teams in World Cup divisions I to III are then placed next to the World Cup participants. In the case of groups in a division that are played in parallel, the teams are first placed according to their rank in their group, then according to points scored, then according to goal difference:

1 For women: Winner of Division IA, 2 For men: Winner of Division IA |
The current, last world championship is 100 percent included in the result, the influence then decreases by 25 percentage points per year. At the Olympic Winter Games, not only the placements of the nations participating in the Olympic ice hockey tournament, but also those that did not qualify from the qualifying tournaments are included in the world rankings. Thus, the points scored in the qualifying tournaments for the Olympic tournament in Vancouver held during the 2008/09 season counted for 2010.
For the world rankings of 2013, this meant, for example, for the gold medal (1200 points):
competition | year | Rating coefficient |
Points |
---|---|---|---|
World Championship this year | 2013 | 100% | 1200 |
World Championship previous year | 2012 | 75% | 900 |
World Championship 2 years ago | 2011 | 50% | 600 |
World Championship 3 years ago | 2010 | 25% | 300 |
Olympic Games 3 years ago | 2010 | 25% | 300 |
World Championship 4 years ago | 2009 | 0% | 0 |
If there is a tie, the better result of the last World Cup counts. Before the World Championships, the IIHF publishes a preliminary ranking list in which the tournaments from previous years have already been downscaled and only the results of the current World Championships are missing.
