The Turkmen national ice hockey team for men has existed since 2011. It is organized by the Turkmenistanyň gyşgy sport görnüşleriniň milli merkezi .

Turkmen ice hockey got a big boost in 2006 after President Saparmyrat Nyýazow had an ice rink built in the Kopet Dag Mountains. The national team formed in 2011 played for the first time internationally in a friendly against Minsk in 2013. Turkmenistanyň gyşgy sport görnüşleriniň milli merkezi has been a member of the IIHF since 2015 .

In 2017, Turkmenistan took part in an IIHF competition for the first time. At the Asian Winter Games , Turkmenistan won all games in Division II and thus reached 11th place out of 18 teams. A few weeks later, the team decided not to participate in the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia 2017, despite prior notification . In 2018 , the country took part in a world championship tournament, qualifying for Division III, for the first time. There the sovereign promotion to Division III succeeded.
