Mongolian national ice hockey team

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mongolian national ice hockey team is the selection of the best players of the Mongolian ice hockey association, which was only admitted to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in 1999 . After participating in the Winter Asian Games in 1999 and 2003 , the team took part in the World Cup of Division III in 2007 in Dundalk , Ireland , for the first time in a world championship. After the 2014 World Cup, the men's team was ranked 49th in the IIHF world rankings .

In this first World Cup participation, Mongolia had to admit defeat in double digits in every game, but still played relatively well compared to first appearances of other nations at World Cups: two games were "only" lost by nine goals, the difference was never higher than 14 goals. A year later there was a record defeat against North Korea at 0:17 , but a total of eleven goals were scored in the five lost games (2007: 3 goals in four games). The team did not receive an entry visa for the 2009 World Cup, so all games were rated 0: 5. Participation in the 2011 World Cup failed because of problems with financing and purchasing equipment. In 2013 Mongolia took part in the pre-qualification for the Ice Hockey World Championship, Division III. Here, the Mongolian selection lost their games against Greece and the United Arab Emirates each narrowly, but won against Georgia 6-0. The qualification for Division III was missed with the 3rd place achieved.

The Mongols achieved their greatest successes to date at the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia , when they achieved third place in 2013 and 2014. As part of the Challenge Cup 2013, a 20-0 win against India on March 16, 2013 in Bangkok also marked the country's highest win in the history of international matches.
