The ice hockey competitions of the IV Winter Asian Games took place from January 30 to February 6, 1999 in the South Korean province of Gangwon-do . In addition to the host nation South Korea, five other countries - Japan , the People's Republic of China , Kazakhstan , Mongolia and Kuwait - took part in the competition. With Mongolia and Kuwait taking part for the first time, a new record number of participants was achieved. The gold medal was secured again by Kazakhstan, which did not lose a tournament. Behind them Japan and China won the other medals.

Four teams took part in the women's ice hockey tournament. The participants were the host nation, Japan, Kazakhstan and the People's Republic of China. As with the men, the People's Republic of China was able to win the gold medal without defeat and defend its title. Here, too, silver went to Japan, while Kazakhstan took bronze.
