The Japanese national ice hockey team at the 2006 Deutschland Cup in Hanover

The Japanese men's national ice hockey team has been participating in world championships since 1930 , and the first participation in the Olympic Games followed in 1936 . Since the 1960s, the Japanese have been commuting between group B and C group tournaments. From 1998 onwards, the Japanese were placed in the A group as representatives of Asia. This was lifted in 2005. The Japanese selection entered the 2006 Germany Cup in Hanover and was the last to finish the tournament. In the IIHF world rankings, the Japanese team ranks 23rd after the 2018 World Cup .

In addition to the Kazakh and South Korean national ice hockey teams, the team is considered one of the best Asian ice hockey nations and was able to win the gold medal at the Asia Winter Games in 2007. At the men's ice hockey world championship in 2014 , the Japanese team finished third in Group A of Division I behind Slovenia and Austria and only missed promotion to the top division when they were tied with Austria due to the 1: 4 defeat in a direct comparison.

The Japanese women's ice hockey team took part in the first women's world championship in 1990 and regularly commutes between the A and B groups. In 2007 , at the Division I World Cup in their own country, women were promoted to the A group, from which they were relegated in 2004.
