The fourth Hockey World Cup was the first World Cup in hockey that are not within the scope of the Olympic Games took place. The International Ice Hockey Federation had decided to host an ice hockey world championship every year from 1930 onwards; in Olympic years the Olympic tournament should be counted as a world championship. The tournament was also the 15th European ice hockey championship - from this year the world ice hockey championship replaced the European ice hockey championship, which was previously held annually as a separate tournament. From then on, the placement of the European teams at the World Cup was decisive for the European Championship placements.

The World Cup tournament, which was originally supposed to start on January 27 and was postponed due to the thaw, took place from January 31 to February 10, 1930. The original venue was Chamonix in France . After the third round on February 2, 1930, the thaw set in again, so that the natural ice rinks could no longer be used. The last two games were therefore played on February 9 and 10, 1930 in the Berlin Sports Palace in Germany . At the request of the Austrians, the game for third place was awarded to Vienna in Austria on February 5, 1930 . Until 2012 , the 1930 tournament was the only world championship held in several countries. In 2017 the World Cup took place again in Germany and France.

A total of 12 teams took part: defending champions Canada , Japan with its first World Cup participation and ten European teams, including Poland for the first time . The tournament was played as a challenge tournament. In the challenge round, an opponent was sought for the defending champion. Originally, three preliminary round groups (two times four and one time three teams) were planned. Due to the postponement of the tournament, the round was held in the knockout system.

Canada successfully defended its title and became world champion for the fourth time. Germany became European champions for the first time.
