The 1st European Ice Hockey Championship was the first official international tournament for national teams. The European continental championship should be held annually in the future.
The European Championship tournament took place from January 10th to 12th 1910 in Les Avants in Switzerland . The venue was a frozen lake above Montreux .
In the run-up to the tournament there was a fierce dispute over the mode of the tournament (American system, i.e. everyone against everyone, or KO system), which meant that France did not take part in the tournament. Thus four teams played for the European title according to the American system. In addition to the host, Switzerland , Germany , Belgium and Great Britain took part in this tournament. Germany and Great Britain had their best club teams represented at this tournament ( Berlin ice skating club and Princes Ice Hockey Club , respectively ), while Belgium and Switzerland competed with national teams (in Switzerland, however, only players from French clubs). In addition to competition, a selection of Canadian students from Oxford took part in the tournament, although the British did not compete against this team.
The team from Great Britain became the first European champions in ice hockey history.
