The games of the A group of the 44th Ice Hockey World Championship and the 55th Ice Hockey European Championship took place from April 21 to May 8, 1977 in Vienna , Austria . Group B played in Tokyo , Japan from March 10 to March 21, and Group C teams met in Copenhagen , Denmark from March 12 to March 20 . With 24 participating teams, there was a new record. For the first time a team from Spain competed in an ice hockey world championship; in addition, a Canadian team took part for the first time since 1969.

After there had been a European ice hockey championship for juniors under 19 years of age (U19) since 1969, a junior world championship was held for the first time this year . Players under 20 years of age (U20) were allowed.

The World Cup tournament in Vienna was one of the most exciting in World Cup history, which was primarily due to the lack of continuity of performance of the supposed favorites. Canada - after the rift with the international amateur ice hockey federation IIHF for the first time in eight years - gambled away almost all chances for gold in the preliminary round when, in addition to two defeats against the USSR and Sweden, it could only fight for at least one point against Czechoslovakia . Even the best record of all participants with convincing victories against Czechoslovakia and Sweden in the subsequent final round did not bring any improvement in the ranking for the record world champion and meant fourth place in the end. On the other hand, the USSR seemed to be heading towards a superior title win after sovereign preliminary round victories against Canada and Czechoslovakia, but suffered two clear defeats against Sweden both in the preliminary and in the final round. After losing revenge against Czechoslovakia in the round of medals, the title contender only ended up in third place. Preliminary round winner Sweden remained after his renewed victory against the Soviet selection in the final round without further success and ultimately won the silver medal. In the end, Czechoslovakia was able to successfully defend its title, although it again failed to win against Canada in both matches. It was the 5th World Cup and the 14th European Championship title win for the Czechoslovaks.

Attendees

The six best teams from the previous year's World Cup as well as the first-placed team from the previous year's B group took part in the tournament. In addition, the Canadian national team returned to the World Cup and was divided into the A group.

mode

The host mode of last year's A-WM was retained. First there was a preliminary round with all eight teams, then the best four teams played for titles and medals and the other four teams against relegation. The points from the preliminary round were taken over; in the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided.
