Pierre R. Larouche (born November 16, 1955 in Taschereau , Québec ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . From 1974 to 1987 he played in the National Hockey League for the Pittsburgh Penguins , Montréal Canadiens , Hartford Whalers and the New York Rangers on the position of the center .

Career

Pierre Larouche was born in 1955 as the youngest of ten children in the Québec town of Taschereau . In the 1972/73 season he first played for the Québec Remparts in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . After 20 games for the Remparts, he moved to the Sorel Éperviers in the league . In the 1973/74 season , Larouche, who played together with Jacques Cossette and Michel Deziel in an attack row, scored 94 goals and 157 assists in 67 games for Sorel for a total of 251 points , which meant a new LHJMQ point record. The record was broken ten years later by Mario Lemieux , who scored 282 points in 70 games.

In the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft , Larouche was selected in the first round in eighth position by the Pittsburgh Penguins , in the WHA Amateur Draft in the same year the Houston Eros selected him in the second round in a total of 30th position. Pierre Larouche decided to go on the ice for the Penguins from the 1974/75 season . In his first NHL game on October 9, 1974, he scored his first goal against the Minnesota North Stars . In his first year he was the best rookie with 68 points and took second place in the election for the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best newcomer of the year behind winner Eric Vail . In his second NHL season, Larouche set his personal bests with 53 goals and 58 assists, a total of 111 points. He was also the youngest player ever to reach 50 goals and 100 points - this record was broken by Wayne Gretzky in 1980 .

Larouche could not build on these performances in the following two seasons. The Canadian was transferred to the Montréal Canadiens on November 29, 1977 by the Penguins in exchange for Pete Mahovlich and Peter-John Lee . In the 1979/80 season he achieved very good values with 50 goals and 41 assists in 73 games. Larouche was transferred to the Hartford Whalers on December 21, 1981 together with Montreal's first-round draft pick for the 1984 NHL Entry Draft and a third-round vote for the 1985 draft . In return, the Canadiens received Hartford's first and second round draft picks for the Entry Draft 1984 and their third round suffrage for the Entry Draft 1985. Larouche completed 83 games for Whalers in one and a half years, thereby achieving 90 points scorer.

On September 12, 1983, the contractless player signed a new contract with the New York Rangers , for which he was active for four years. In his first season in New York, the right-shooter scored 48 goals this season. This makes him the only player to date who has scored over 45 goals in one season for more than three franchises. In his third season with the Rangers, the attacker acted in a row with Bob Brooke and Ron Greschner . The following season Larouche played temporarily on the position of the right winger, his new partners were Don Maloney and Kelly Kisio . On January 14, 1987, Larouche ran in an NHL game against the Calgary Flames as team captain of the Rangers on the ice, since Ron Greschner was unfit to play on that day.

After Pierre Larouche could only complete the first ten games of the 1987/88 NHL season due to a pinched nerve in his back , the Canadian announced his retirement in September 1988.

International

Pierre Larouche represented his native Canada at the 1977 Ice Hockey World Championship . Together with the Canadian national team , he finished fourth in this tournament. The center was used in all ten Canadians games, scoring seven goals and eight assists.
