The GHQ Line (also known as GHQ Line called) was a British during the Second World War created line of defense . This line, laid out as the main defense position, was intended to protect the greater London area and the industrial area in central England . This defense system begins at the north end of the Taunton Stop Line near Highbridge in Somerset , then runs along the River Brue and the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading , south around London via Guildford and Aldershot to Canvey Island and Great Chesterford in Essex before it ends in the north near Yorkshire . This line of defense was built against a potential German landing in England ( Operation Sea Lion ). The position consisted of so-called pillbox bunkers.
