The 1981/82 NHL season was the 65th season in the National Hockey League . 21 teams played 80 games each. The Stanley Cup won the New York Islanders after a 4-0 win in the final series against the Vancouver Canucks . New season, new records from Wayne Gretzky. With 212 points, he was the first and only player to reach the 200 point mark and should exceed this mark three times. In the preseason, Mike Bossy was admired as the second player after Maurice Richard in NHL history to score 50 goals in 50 games. Gretzky scored for the 50th time in his 39th game. Its 92 goals have not been reached until today. The Oilers scored 417 goals that season. Apart from the Oilers, who were to surpass the 400 mark in the following four years, no other team had ever scored 400 goals again. In the playoffs this season the division was played separately for the first time and the two division winners then met in the final.
