Dale Martin Hawerchuk (born April 4, 1963 in Toronto , Ontario , † August 18, 2020 in Barrie , Ontario) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach who played 1285 games for the Winnipeg Jets between 1979 and 1997 , Buffalo Sabers , St. Louis Blues and Philadelphia Flyers competed in the National Hockey League (NHL) on the position of the center . Hawerchuk, who was selected as the overall first by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft and competed a total of five times in the NHL All-Star Game , was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001 in recognition of his extraordinary career . From 2010 until his death, he was the head coach of the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Career

In the draft of the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , Hawerchuk was chosen as the sixth player by the Cornwall Royals in 1979. He was named Rookie of the Year with 103 points.

In the 1981 NHL Entry Draft he was then selected by the Winnipeg Jets as number 1. He fulfilled all expectations placed in him. Again he managed 103 points, making him the youngest player in the NHL to reach the 100 point mark. He was invited to the NHL All-Star Game and won the Calder Memorial Trophy at the end of the season . He confirmed his class with 91 points in his second season and then managed more than 100 points five times in a row. At Rendez-vous '87 he was a member of the NHL team. In 1990 he was given to the Buffalo Sabers during the draft . After five years in Buffalo, he moved to St. Louis for a brief stint before joining the Philadelphia Flyers . Hawerchuk and his teams qualified for the playoffs almost every year, but at the latest in the second round it was the end of the line. Now 34 years old, he made it to the Stanley Cup final with the Flyers in the 1996/97 season , which however was lost. Then he ended his active career.

In 2001 he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame .

In April 2010 Hawerchuk was appointed head coach of the Barrie Colts from the Ontario Hockey League , for which he has been behind the gang since the 2010/11 season. In this role he was elected to the league's second all-star team after the 2017/18 season .

He died on August 18, 2020 at the age of 57 years to cancer .
