Career
Suter played during his junior years between 1981 and 1983 with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the United States Hockey League , before he went from 1983 for two seasons for the team of the University of Wisconsin-Madison on the ice. In the 1984 NHL Entry Draft , he had to wait until the ninth round, where the Calgary Flames selected him from the National Hockey League as 180th. He stayed at the university for another year and played for the United States in the 1984 Junior World Championship before moving to the National Hockey League in Calgary.
In his first professional season he collected 68 points as a defender, which earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the best rookie . In his third season, 1987/88 , he achieved 70 assists with 91 points, the highest value of his career. At the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1989 , he won the Stanley Cup with the Flames . In 1994 the Flames handed him over to the Hartford Whalers , but Hartford went on to the Chicago Blackhawks the next day without having played a game .
Suter stayed in Chicago for four and a half years before he was replaced there by Paul Coffey because he was injured. In San Jose it had been registered that Suter was available and brought him for the 1998/99 season , in which he played only one game. He came back on the ice the following season and was a great defender of the Sharks until 2002. He crowned his career by winning a silver medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City . In 2011 he was honored with induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
