The playoffs for the Stanley Cup of 1989 began on April 5, 1989 and ended on May 25, 1989 with the 4-2 victory of the Calgary Flames against the Canadiens de Montréal . The Flames won their first and so far only Stanley Cup in franchise history . In addition, they made Al MacInnis the most valuable player of this post-season , who was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy and , as a defender, also topped the playoffs scorer list. The defeated Canadiens, however, had to accept the first final defeat since 1967 , where they had in the meantime played nine finals victoriously; including against the Calgary Flames in 1986 (4: 1). To date, the 1989 playoffs mark the last time that two Canadian teams faced each other in the final (as of 2019 playoffs).

The New York Islanders missed the post-season for the first time since 1974 , so one of the longest series in league history ended with 14 consecutive playoff appearances.

mode

After the four teams with the best points from each division have qualified, the playoffs , which are held in the knockout system , start . The respective first meets the fourth and the second meets the third of each division, so that the division winners are played out in the first two rounds. These then compete in the conference finals for entry into the Stanley Cup finals.

All series in each round are played in best-of-seven mode, which means that a team needs four wins to reach the next round. The higher seeded team has home rights in the first two games, the next two the opposing team. If no winner has emerged from the round by then, home rights will change from game to game. The higher-ranked team has a home advantage in games 1, 2, 5 and 7, i.e. four of the maximum seven games. The winner of the Prince of Wales Conference will receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and the winner of the Campbell Conference will receive the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl .

In the case of games that remain a draw after the regular playing time of 60 minutes, overtime follows . It ends with the first goal scored ( Sudden Death ) .
