Robert Stewart "Stew" Gavin (born March 15, 1960 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and scout , who played 834 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Hartford Whalers and Minnesota between 1977 and 1995 North Stars played in the National Hockey League on the right winger position .

Career

Gavin began his junior career in the 1976/77 season with the lower class junior team Nepean Raiders . The team came from a suburb of the Canadian capital Ottawa - his hometown. At the end of the season, the striker was appointed to the squad of the Ottawa 67’s from the higher-class Ontario Major Junior Hockey League . With the 67's, Gavin won the OHL championship trophy in the form of the J. Ross Robertson Cup at the end of the playoffs . He then took part in the prestigious Memorial Cup with the franchise . At the beginning of the 1977/78 season he was finally in the squad of league rivals Toronto Marlboros , which he belonged to the following three seasons. He reached the mark of 40 scorer points and was also selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1980 in the fourth round in 74th place by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League .

Their farm team , the New Brunswick Hawks from the American Hockey League , Gavin joined for the 1980/81 season when they entered the professional world. Including the playoffs, he completed 59 missions for the team and also celebrated his debut for the Maple Leafs in the NHL, where he was used 14 times. At the beginning of the game year 1981/82 , the attacker was then an integral part of the NHL squad of Toronto, but it took until the season 1983/84 before he could finally establish himself. He was considered to be a specialist in outnumbered situations .

After the Maple Leafs had ended the season 1984/85 as the worst team in the league, a rebuilding led to Gavin being given to the Hartford Whalers in October 1985 in exchange for Chris Kotsopoulos . There the winger was able to significantly increase his point yield in the first two years and also scored at least 20 goals. After a weaker third year, he was left unprotected in the NHL Waiver Draft in October 1988 and selected by the Minnesota North Stars . With the North Stars, with whom he reached the final series in the 1991 Stanley Cup playoffs , the Canadian again filled a more defensive role. In addition, injuries meant that he only played all 80 games of the season in one of the five years. In the remaining four years there were even fewer than 40 missions twice due to injuries.

Due to a knee injury sustained in the first half of 1993, Gavin announced his retirement from active sport on the advice of his doctors at the age of 33 before the 1993/94 season. However, he remained in the North Stars franchise that had moved to Dallas before the start of the season and continued operations as the Dallas Stars . There he was employed as a scout . Since the healing of his knee had gone better than expected in the course of the year, Gavin considered a comeback for the 1994/95 season with the help of his ex-team Toronto Maple Leafs. A return to the HNL did not succeed, however, and so he came only in the International Hockey League for the Minnesota Moose - and after a change - the Kansas City Blades to use. In the summer of 1995 he finally retired from professional sports.
