The Ottawa 67’s are a Canadian ice hockey team from Ottawa . The team was founded in 1967 as a youth team and plays in one of the three highest Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

history

On February 16, 1967, the City of Ottawa was awarded an expansion franchise by the Ontario Hockey Association . In June, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the state, an agreement was reached on the name 67’s . Among the three businessmen who managed to bring junior hockey back to Ottawa was former NHL star Bill Cowley . After the Ottawa Junior Canadiens and the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens played in the Canadian capital in the 1950s and 1960s, a void had emerged in the city's sports scene since 1963.

The 67's lost their first game on October 6, 1967 9-0 against the Niagara Falls Flyers . Since the new hall was still under construction, the team played their first eleven home games in the sister city of Hull .

In 1972 the host was not allowed to automatically take part in the final tournament of the Memorial Cup . The team narrowly missed qualification. It was the great stroke of luck in the team's history when, in 1974, Brian Kilrea was hired, a young coach who mostly played in the minor leagues and only played 26 games in the NHL.

In the following ten years he formed a successful team that made it to the OHA final three times, and after a final defeat in 1977, then in 1984 finally won the first Memorial Cup. Kilrea had moved into the spotlight and followed an offer from the NHL. The New York Islanders hired him as an assistant coach. After the next two seasons were neither successful for him nor for the 67's, he returned to Ottawa. The next eight years were not as successful as his first term. In 1994 he retired and Peter-John Lee took over the team.

A year later, Kilrea took over the coaching position for the third time and also became general manager. This time there were soon successes again. In 1999 they hosted the Memorial Cup and were able to keep the cup in town. In 2001 and 2005 they qualified for the final tournament. Both times, however, there was no chance. The now well over 70 year old Kilrea is still behind the gang of the 67's.
