Alyn Daniel McCauley (born May 29, 1977 in Brockville , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach as well as current scout , who played 540 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs , San Jose Sharks between 1993 and 2007 and Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League on the position of the center . McCauley celebrated numerous successes, especially in the junior sector, including winning the Junior World Championship twice in 1996 and 1997 with the Canadian U20 national team . Since summer 2017 he has worked as a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL.
Career
Alyn McCauley began his career in 1993 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Ottawa 67’s . After two years in which he began to show his skills, he was selected in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils in the fourth round at position 79. Only then did he develop into a top player in the OHL. In the 1995/96 season he scored 82 points in 55 games for Ottawa and 56 goals and 56 assists the following year, which is why he was named Most Valuable Player of the OHL in both seasons . He received an even greater honor in 1997 from the governing body of the three most important Canadian junior leagues, the Canadian Hockey League , which named him the best player of the year. During his time in Ottawa he also played for the U20 team of Team Canada at the Junior World Championships in 1996 and 1997 and won gold medals both times.
In the summer of 1997 he moved to the professionals in the National Hockey League , but not to the New Jersey Devils, which had given the rights to him in a transfer deal at the beginning of the year to the Toronto Maple Leafs . In Toronto he was immediately allowed on the ice in the NHL. Since he had to concentrate more on the defensive, he could only achieve six goals and ten assists. In the 1998/99 season he was able to improve and scored 24 points in 39 games. However, he sustained several injuries and a severe concussion, which he sustained in a game against the New Jersey Devils of all places, not only incapacitated him for a long time, but also jeopardized the continuation of his career.
In 1999/2000 he made 45 appearances for Toronto, but his game had deteriorated due to the severe head injury. He tried to recover sufficiently during the summer break of 2000 and felt physically strong enough for the NHL again, but at the start of the 2000/01 season he found himself only on the farm team in the American Hockey League . 2001/02 he returned to the NHL and stood out in the playoffs when he scored 15 points in 20 games and the team advanced to the finals of the Eastern Conference.
During the 2002/03 season he was transferred to the San Jose Sharks . He had his best season in 2003-04 when he scored 20 goals and 27 assists. He also wore the "C" as captain of the Sharks for ten games . During the lockout and failure of the 2004/05 NHL season , McCauley studied for a year at Athabasca University , but then returned to the San Jose Sharks before leaving the team as an unrestricted free agent .
In the summer of 2006 he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Kings . Due to injuries, he only came to ten missions in the 2006/07 season and his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2007. McCauley announced that he would not be returning to the ice until late in the 2007-08 season in an effort to fully recover from his injury. When he was still unable to return to active ice hockey in the summer of 2008, he joined the Queen's University ice hockey team as an assistant coach. As a professional ice hockey player, Alyn McCauley had failed to match his performance in the juniors, when he received several awards. However, he has established himself as a good two-way striker who works a lot on the defensive in addition to offensive actions and received a 2004 nomination for the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the best defensive striker in the NHL.
He has been working as a scout since the 2009/10 season . Initially for six years until summer 2015 for his ex-team Los Angeles Kings and since 2017 for their league rivals Philadelphia Flyers .
