In the following years the Canadian established himself in the team's squad and remained loyal to it for twelve years until the end of the 1995/96 season .
After the Maple Leafs sent him to the San Jose Sharks as part of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Jamie Baker , Gill's odyssey through the NHL began. He stayed with the Sharks for a total of two years, during which he was also the team captain . This was followed by engagements with the St. Louis Blues , Detroit Red Wings , Phoenix Coyotes , again the Detroit Red Wings, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks .

After the team moved, he worked in the same position at Stockton Heat for two years from 2015 . The Canadian then returned to the OHL and took over the post of head coach of the Owen Sound Attack for the 2017/18 season . There he was released from his duties at the end of January 2019.
