Career

Player career

Gill played in his time as a junior from 1982 to 1985 for the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League , where he in the 1984/85 season to the Third All-Star team was selected. After the offensive defender in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second round in 25th position, he played his first NHL game for the Maple Leafs in the 1984/85 season . In the following years the Canadian established himself in the team's squad and remained loyal to it for twelve years until the end of the 1995/96 season .

After the Maple Leafs sent him to the San Jose Sharks as part of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Jamie Baker , Gill's odyssey through the NHL began. He stayed with the Sharks for a total of two years, during which he was also the team captain . This was followed by engagements with the St. Louis Blues , Detroit Red Wings , Phoenix Coyotes , again the Detroit Red Wings, Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks .

After a total of 19 NHL seasons, he let his career in Germany end with the Lausitzer Füchsen in the 2003/04 season . He had his best season in the game year 1992/93 in the service of the Toronto Maple Leafs with 43 points.

Coaching career

Starting in the 2006/07 season, he served five seasons as the head coach and general manager of the Brockville Braves in the Central Junior A Hockey League and was named Coach of the Year in 2007. He was also the owner of the team between 2006 and 2008. For the 2011/12 season, he was involved with the Kingston Frontenacs in the Ontario Hockey League, where he replaced Doug Gilmour in the position of head coach. With the Frontenacs Gill was active for three seasons before he was signed by the Calgary Flames .

They put him in the 2014/15 season as head coach in their farm team , the Adirondack Flames , in the American Hockey League. After the team moved, he worked in the same position at Stockton Heat for two years from 2015 . The Canadian then returned to the OHL and took over the post of head coach of the Owen Sound Attack for the 2017/18 season . There he was released from his duties at the end of January 2019.

Between 2010 and 2012, Gill also worked for the Canadian ice hockey association Hockey Canada , where he was in charge of the U18 and U19 selection teams.
