Joseph James "Joe" Pavelski (born July 11, 1984 in Stevens Point , Wisconsin ) is an American ice hockey player of Polish descent who has been under contract with the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League since July 2019 . Before that, the center spent almost 13 years with the San Jose Sharks , which he also led for four years as team captain. With the US national team , he won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics .

Career

After Pavelski in his last year at high school with his team, the Stevens Point Area High School , the championship of the state Wisconsin had won, he moved to the 2002/03 season with the Waterloo Blackhawks in the United States Hockey League , with which he won the Clark Cup in the first year of his team membership . His yield of 69 points in 60 regular season games and twelve points in seven playoff games meant that he was named Rookie of the Year of the USHL and in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round in 205th position by the San Jose Sharks was selected. He was also elected to the league's All-Rookie Team and First All-Star Team. After another season with the Black Hawks Pavelski moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison , where he was able to win the national college championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association with the Wisconsin Badgers in his sophomore year . With 53 points in 41 games, the American made a significant contribution to the successful season of the Badgers, for which Tom Gilbert , Adam Burish and Jack Skille also played that year, and finally crowned an excellent year for him with assists for the two goals of his team in the final.

Before the start of the 2006/07 season Pavelski signed his first professional contract with the San Jose Sharks, which initially only used him in the lower class American Hockey League with the Worcester Sharks , their farm team . After an injury to Jonathan Cheechoo Pavelski was appointed on November 22, 2006 for the first time in the NHL squad San Joses. In his first game against the Los Angeles Kings he scored his first goal, making him the eleventh player in Sharks history to achieve this feat. In the course of the season, the center forward found his place in the squad of the Northern California franchise and completed a total of 46 games in which he posted 28 points scorer. Although he achieved an average of fewer points per game in the 2007/08 game year, he improved steadily, which meant that he was an important part of the second storm row and in the power play . Especially in the last third of the season Pavelski showed that he had the potential for the NHL despite his small height. The center confirmed this impression in the subsequent playoffs, where he was one of the best players in his team with nine points. Over the summer break, the striker was able to preserve his performance and introduced himself well to the Sharks' system, which was more offensive in the 2008/09 season . His ex-team, the Waterloo Black Hawks, finally recognized Pavelski's breakthrough and accomplishments in the NHL on February 24, 2009 when they locked his number 8 jersey in a ceremony. He was the fifth Black Hawks player to receive this honor. The striker ended his best NHL season with 59 points in 80 games, increasing his record from the previous year by 19 points. In the playoffs, he could not prevent the failure in the first round. With the beginning of the 2015/16 season Pavelski was appointed the new team captain of the Sharks; he is assisted by Logan Couture and Joe Thornton .

After 13 years in San Jose, during which he played over 1000 games for the Sharks, he joined the Dallas Stars as a free agent in July 2019 . There he signed a three-year contract that should bring him an average annual salary of $ 7 million.

International

On the international stage Pavelski played for the first time at the 2009 World Cup in Switzerland for the United States national team , when he was nominated after the elimination of the San Jose Sharks from the playoffs of the National Hockey League at the beginning of the intermediate round of the tournament. In five matches he was able to contribute two scorer points. Ultimately, after narrow defeats in the semi-finals and the game for third place, only fourth place was to be booked. Because of his achievements, the striker was added to the final, 23-man squad for the Vancouver Winter Olympics in early January 2010 .
