Thomas "Tom" Kelly Gilbert (* 10. January 1983 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who, since July 2017 the Nuremberg Ice Tigers of the German Ice Hockey League is under contract and for those on the position of the defender plays .

Career

After graduating from Bloomington Jefferson High School in the US state of Minnesota in the summer of 2001, Gilbert joined the Chicago Steel from the United States Hockey League . There he was an integral part of the team in the 2001/02 season, having played his first game for the team in the preseason. Already after the 2001/02 season, Gilbert was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the fourth round in 129th position, but moved to the University of Wisconsin – Madison for the next four years , where he worked with the Wisconsin Badgers university team in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association of the National Collegiate Athletic Association played. During this time he was transferred from the Colorado Avalanche in March 2004 for goalkeeper Tommy Salo and a six- round suffrage in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft to the Edmonton Oilers and won the NCAA Division I Championship with the Badgers at the end of the 2005/06 season . Gilbert scored the decisive opening goal in the 2-0 victory over Boston College on presentation of Joe Pavelski and was the outstanding defender of the team for the entire season.

In the summer of 2006 Gilbert switched to the professional field and played for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins in the American Hockey League , the Oilers' farm team at the time. His outstanding rookie season with 30 points in 48 games convinced the Oilers' scouts very much, so they called him to the NHL squad during the season, where the American continued to attract attention with six points from twelve games. Due to his good performance in the Oilers summer training camp, he got a regular place at the start of the 2007/08 season and played a solid year that he ended as by far the most dangerous rookie defender in the league. His 13 goals this season set a new franchise record for a newcomer to the Edmonton Oilers' defense. In April 2008, he agreed with the Edmonton Oilers to extend his contract by six years until the end of the 2013/14 season , which gives the American an average annual salary of around four million US dollars.

On February 27, 2012, the Edmonton Oilers transferred him to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Nick Schultz . In July 2013, his contract was early paid out by the Wild ( buy out ). After a season with the Florida Panthers , Gilbert joined the Canadiens de Montréal in the summer of 2014 . These did not extend his expiring contract after the 2015/16 season, so the defender joined the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in July 2016 . Gilbert was in the squad there until February 2017, before he was sent to the AHL by management. They then transferred him to league rivals Washington Capitals , where he ran up for the Hershey Bears farm team until the end of the season. In July 2017 he moved to the Nürnberg Ice Tigers in the German Ice Hockey League . His contract there was extended by two years in July 2018.
