The 72nd Men's Ice Hockey World Championship (officially: 2008 IIHF World Championship Canada ) took place from May 2nd to 18th, 2008. It was the first A World Cup in Canada , the "motherland" of ice hockey, and the first tournament of its kind in North America since the 1962 World Cup . Another special feature is that the IIHF ice hockey association celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008.

Canada was awarded the contract to host the event at the annual meeting of the World Ice Hockey Federation in Prague in May 2004. Germany and Sweden withdrew their candidacies shortly before the vote, so that Canada was ultimately the only candidate.

Russia became world champion .

Mode changes

There were four major changes to the 2008 World Cup compared to the previous tournaments:

  • a modified mode in the quarter-finals, in which the intermediate round groups were played; That means, the first placed against the fourth placed and the second placed against the third placed in the same group.
  • the relegation was played for the first time in the " best-of-three " mode, with the last group in groups A and D and the last group in groups B and C meeting.
  • it was played for the first time since 1962 on the four meters narrower NHL playing fields (60 × 26 m instead of 60 × 30 m).
  • the four-referee system with two main referees and two line judges was introduced.

In the game between Germany and Slovakia, which Germany won 4-2, the native Canadian Jason Holland was used on the German side , who should not have played according to the regulations. In 1996 he played for Canada during the Junior World Championship . After that, he would have had to play in Germany for at least four years. At this point in time, however, his contract in Ingolstadt had only existed for three years. In retrospect, the game should have been rated 5-0 for Slovakia at the “ Green Table ”. The IIHF decided differently and justified the retention of the German victory, with an otherwise unfair influence on the further course of the tournament.

Explanations: Quarter-final qualifier

The game between the USA and Finland was influenced by a wrong decision by a video referee. Shortly after the start of the last period, the USA team were 2-0 up when the Finn was able to reduce Ville Koistinen to 1: 2 with a slap shot during an outnumbered situation . The hit was checked for correctness by video evidence and found to be valid. However, the images taken by the camera positioned above the goal clearly showed the irregularity of the hit, as the puck had found its way into the goal from the side - through a hole in the net next to the post. The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF confirmed the wrong decision after the end of the game, but emphasized that the rating of the game, which Finland won 3-2 in the end, would remain, as it was a factual decision. The video referee involved was released from the rest of the tournament.

Relegation round

Group G

The relegation round was held for the first time in the " best-of-three " mode in order to save the teams travel stress. The fourth placed in group A and fourth in group D as well as the last two placed in groups B and C met each other. The teams that won two of a maximum of three games remained in the World Cup group, the two losers were relegated to Division I.

The quarter-final pairings showed the sometimes large deficits of the "small" ice hockey nations compared to the favorites for the tournament victory. While the games between the Czech Republic and Sweden and the United States and Finland were only decided in extra time in favor of the two Scandinavian countries, the Canadians and Russians had an easy time with their opponents from Switzerland and Norway .

  • In the first quarter-finals, the reigning Olympic champion Sweden prevailed against the Czech Republic in extra time. Sweden's top scorer Mattias Weinhandl scored the decisive goal for the 3-2 win in the fourth minute of extra time, after his team-mate Marcus Nilson had equalized the game just four minutes before the end of regular time.
  • The clash between tournament favorites Canada and outsiders Norway was only balanced until half of the game, as the Norwegians were able to hold a 2-2 draw until then. As the game progressed, however, as the strength waned, they could no longer resist the superiority of the Canadians and finally lost with 2: 8.
  • The victory of Russia against Switzerland was just as clear. The Swiss team went into the game with the recommendation of a victory against Sweden, but after just seven minutes Russia were in the lead with three goals. In the course of the second period, the Russian team continuously expanded their lead to the final score of 6: 0. The Swiss Philippe Furrer underwent a strange own goal.
  • In the last quarter-finals, Finland became the last team to make it to the semi-finals with a 3-2 victory over the United States. Up until four minutes before the end of regular time, the Finns were in the lead by two goals. The Americans managed to equalize with a double strike within 37 seconds. Finally, Sami Lepistö scored in the 4th minute of extra time to win for Finland.

In the two semi-finals, the two teams that were still undefeated in the course of the tournament prevailed. While Russia beat Finland 4-0, the reigning world champion Canada struggled against the reigning Olympic champion Sweden. They fell behind for the first time in the tournament after the 2-1 lead of the Swedes in the 23rd minute of the game. Four hits in the middle section finally secured the final, although Sweden was able to reduce it to 4: 5 shortly before the end.

In the game for the bronze medal, Finland clearly beat Sweden 4-0. Despite the clear superiority of the Swedes, Finland went 2-0 into the first third break thanks to goals from Antti Pihlström and Janne Niskala . After a goalless middle section, it was the Finns again in the final third who defeated Stefan Liv twice in the Swedish goal, while Finland's goalkeeper Niklas Bäckström left the Swedish strikers desperate. With third place, the Finns achieved a podium place at the World Championship for the third time in a row.

Russia's Alexander Syomin (left) scores the first goal of the World Cup final

In a fast-paced final in front of 13,339 spectators at Colisée Pepsi , the Russian national team secured their first title at a world championship since 1993 with a 5-4 win in overtime .

The Canadian team, which used many players from the National Hockey League , went into the game as a big favorite. Above all, it relied on the broad squad with the storm row around Ryan Getzlaf , Dany Heatley and Rick Nash . The Russians also built on their players who are active in North America, in their first row they used Alexander Ovetschkin , Sergei Fjodorow and Alexander Sjomin , among others . Yevgeny Nabokov stood in the goal of the Russian team .

Already in the second minute of the game, the Russians took the lead through Alexander Syomin, who had been staged by his two strike partners Ovetschkin and Fyodorov. However, the Canadians equalized almost two and a half minutes later, after an outnumbered situation , with a concealed slap shot by Brent Burns . As a result of the first third, the Canadian team constricted its opponent in its third. The Russian team weakened itself again and again through fouls and the time penalties imposed on individual players. It was Chris Kunitz who finally put Canada in the lead after the Russians lost the puck in the neutral zone. Five minutes later Burns increased to 3-1 with his second goal in a 5v3 majority. With this result, both teams went into the first break. Shortly after the break, the Russians shortened to 2: 3 through Sjomin, but had to accept another two-goal deficit in the 30th minute of the game through Dany Heatley's twelfth tournament goal. In the final half of the game, the Russians acted for the most part with the superiority with which the Canadians had shone at the beginning of the game. First, Alexei Tereshchenko scored the 3: 4 eleven minutes before the end of the game. Ilya Kovalchuk , who failed to score in the entire tournament, equalized the game just under six minutes later. When the score was 4: 4, it went into overtime, in which the Russian team was awarded a power play early on because the Canadian Rick Nash had illegally knocked the puck out of the field. In the majority, Kovalchuk finally scored the 5-4 winner for Russia.
