Marcel Kars (born April 20, 1977 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian - Dutch ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Amstel Tijgers Amsterdam again since 2016 and plays with the club in the newly founded Belgian-Dutch BeNe League .
Career
Marcel Kars, who was born and raised in Toronto as the son of Dutch emigrants, began his career as an ice hockey player with the Barrie Colts , for which he was active in the Canadian junior league Ontario Hockey League in the 1996/97 season . He then attended the University of Guelph for four years , for whose ice hockey team he was active in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport .
From 2002 to 2006 the center played for the Amsterdam Bulldogs (renamed Amstel Tijgers in 2005) in the Eredivisie . With Amsterdam he won the double of the Dutch championship title and cup victory in 2003, 2004 and 2005 . During the summer break of 2006 he played for the Newcastle North Stars in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) and won the Goodall Cup , the Australian championship title , with his team . He contributed to this success as the top scorer and best template provider of the regular season. He then moved to the 2006/07 season for the second team of HC Bozen in the Italian A2 series . After only one season there, Kars went back to Amsterdam and played there in the Eredivisie for his ex-club Amstel Tijgers Amsterdam. In January 2008 he moved to Deggendorf Fire in the German league .
In the 2008/2009 season he returned to the Amstel Tijgers Amsterdam. For this he played until his move to league rivals Tilburg Trappers in November 2009. The 2010/11 season he began with the Zoetermeer Panters , where he was team captain. For this he scored 21 scorer points in 14 games, including five goals, before moving to HYS The Hague within the Eredivisie . With this he was again Dutch champion at the end of the season. In the 2011/12 season he played for their league rivals Eindhoven Kemphanen . After he was on the ice at the Amsterdam G’s , he played for the Heerenveen Flyers in 2014/15 . In 2015 he returned to The Hague and played one season with the club, which is now called Hijs Hokij Den Haag , in the newly founded Belgian-Dutch BeNe League . Since 2016 he has been under contract with Amstel Tijgers Amsterdam, with whom he also plays in the BeNe League.
International
For the Netherlands , Kars took part in the Division I World Championships in 2005 , 2006 , 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 and 2012 . He also competed for the Netherlands in the qualifying tournaments for the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 , in Vancouver in 2010 , in Sochi in 2014 and in Pyeongchang in 2018 .
