The BeNe League is the joint highest ice hockey league in Belgium and the Netherlands, founded in 2015 .
history
The league was founded in 2015 by the Belgian and Dutch ice hockey associations and replaces the Belgian and Dutch honorary division as the highest league in the respective country. Previously, individual Belgian clubs had played in the Dutch Eredivise. All teams from the Belgian and Dutch Eredivise as well as the teams from the Dutch Eerste divisie could apply for the first season .
In May 2017, the Dutch ice hockey association NIJB terminated its cooperation in the BeNeLeague, but revised the decision again in June 2017. In 2019, the Inter Regio Cup with German regional league teams was held parallel to the BeNe League .
Teams
Clubs of the BeNeLiga 2019/20 |
Eighteen clubs applied for the first season. The Utrecht Dragons withdrew their application, GIJS Groningen withdrew shortly before the start of the season. The remaining 16 teams were divided into two groups A and B, so that each team played a home and an away game against the clubs of the same group and one game against the teams in the other group. In the second season, the number of teams decreased to 14. These were also again divided into two groups.
Since the 2017/18 season, a single-track championship has been played without groups. The teams play one home and one away game against the other participants and the best eight teams of the regular season play the championship in the play-offs.
