The club was founded in 1967 as Thialf Heerenveen and plays its home games in the Thialf IJsstadion in Heerenveen with a capacity of 3,500 . The club has had the following names since it was founded due to changing main sponsors: Feenstra Verwarming Heerenveen, Feenstra Flyers, Pelgrim Flyers, Formido Flyers, Vadeko Flyers, Hajé Flyers and Unis Flyers .

The Flyers had their strongest phase in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when they won their first seven Dutch championship titles in a row.

In the 2008/09 season, the club reached the play-off quarter-finals after fifth place in the regular season , but there they failed with 1: 2 wins at the Nijmegen Devils . In 2015 , the playoff final of the honor division could be reached for the first time since 2008, but like seven years before, the final series was lost again to the Tilburg Trappers . In the inaugural season of the newly founded Belgian-Dutch BeNe League , the team finished second in the main round and also reached the playoff final, which was lost to the Belgian representative HYC Herentals . As the best team from the Netherlands, they became their national champions again after more than 30 years. In addition, the eleventh victory in the Dutch Beker Cup was achieved in the same year .
