The Cold Play Sharks (CP Sharks) is an ice hockey club from Mechelen , Belgium , whose first team has been playing under the name Golden Sharks in the BeNe League , the highest joint league in Belgium and the Netherlands , since 2018 .

The Cold Play Sharks were founded in 2016. You play in the Ice Skating Center Mechelen in the Leest district , which has a capacity of 1000 people. In 2016 it replaced the old Flanders on Ice ice rink with a capacity of 200 spectators.

history

Already in the first season 2016/17 the Cold Play Sharks won the championship of the second highest league, the National League Division I . The following season they won the championship without losing points. For the first time they also took part in the Belgian Cup , where they celebrated two victories against the BeNe League team IHC Leuven . The competition ended in 5th place.

In 2018 they switched to the BeNe League and changed the name of the first team to Golden Sharks. In the first season they landed in 10th place. So they missed the play-offs, but qualified for the final four of the Belgian championship, which took place in Mechelen. In the semifinals, the Golden Sharks were eliminated against HYC Herentals . In the cup competition they reached 4th place. In the 2019/20 season, they reached the play-offs with 8th place in the main round, but were eliminated in two games against Flyers Heerenveen in the quarter-finals . In the cup they reached fourth place again.

Women

The women's team has been playing in the German 2nd division north since 2017 . In the first season, the championship was only gambled away five seconds before the end of the last game against the Kölner Haie . In the following year it was only enough for 5th place. The league cup tournament at the end of the season in the home hall was won. The 2019/20 season was canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the CP Sharks still had a theoretical chance of winning the championship.

More teams

The second team plays under the name Future Golden Sharks in the National League Division I. Third and fourth teams play as Cold Play Sharks in Division 3 and 4. There are also youth teams in all age groups.
