The women's ice hockey teams of the Cologne EC were founded in 1995 as the Cologne Brownies women's ice hockey team and incorporated into the Cologne EC "Die Haie" in 2017 . In the 2019/20 season, the first team played in the 2nd division north and qualified as champions of the league for the women's ice hockey Bundesliga . The second team, again participating in the game, played in the NRW regional league.
history
Cologne Brownies were founded on September 9, 1995 in Cologne . Since many of the founding members previously played with the Cologne Panthers, the Brownies can be seen as the unofficial successors of this women's team. The club colors were black, blue and white. The association got its name from the translation of the word brownie into German: Heinzelmännchen .
The first few years were characterized by coach changes, friendlies and the effort to put together a team for the league. For the 1998/99 season, the Brownies registered a team with the DEB for the first time . It started in the Landesliga NRW, where the team immediately finished fifth. A year later, the Brownies became NRW Cup winners and thus won their first title. In the 2000/01 season, the Cologne team appeared as a favorite on the rise, but failed in the fight for the title. In the end, however, the brownies rose because the so-called intermediate round, the later 2nd division, was expanded. In the NRW-Pokal they got to the final again, but where they lost against SC Mittelrhein-Neuwied "Die Hühner". At the beginning of 2001, the club was also reinforced by a second team, which has since formed the foundation of the first team.
In their first season in the second-highest division, the Brownies initially struggled, but managed to stay in league as fifth of seven teams. In the 2002/03 season, relegation was again the season's goal, which was achieved in the end with 6th place (this time eight teams). Also in the following season, the sixth place was at the end of the book, with which one could be satisfied. But the demands of the Cologne team increased slowly and they wanted to maintain the constant improvement of the last few years in the fourth year of the second division. Despite the increased pressure, also due to the increased popularity around the cathedral city, the team played their best season to date and at the end of the season finished third behind the top teams of ETC Crimmitschau and SV Brackwede . In September 2005 the Brownies held their anniversary tournament to mark the ten-year anniversary of the club, in which teams from the Bundesliga and the 2nd division took part. In the 2005/06 season, the Brownies were able to celebrate their relegation again thanks to a final sprint. Due to the weak start to the season, however, a better positioning than 6th place was no longer possible.
In the 2006/07 season there was no athletic relegation from the 2nd division north due to the withdrawal of two teams before the start of the season. But with the fourth place achieved in the end, the brownies would have had nothing to do with relegation anyway. The 2nd team, which was reported to be playing for the first time this season and which also included players from EHC Troisdorf , reached 7th place in the NRW regional league. In the following season, both teams managed to stay in the league again, with the reserve of Brownies taking third place in the promotion round to the association league. Since then, both teams have always managed to stay in league, which means they continued to compete in the second division or in the fourth-highest division - which has since been renamed the district league - in the 2011/12 season.
For the 2014/15 season, the Brownies founded a third team that was also part of the North Rhine-Westphalia Ice Hockey Association's operations.
In 2016 there were numerous negotiations between the EDT Cologne Brownies and the KEC “Die Haie”, which ultimately led to the inclusion of the Brownies women's ice hockey team in the KEC. In April 2017 the EDT Cologne Brownies eV was dissolved.
In 2020 the first women's team made it to the women's ice hockey Bundesliga .
