The ETC Crimmitschau is a Saxon ice hockey and tennis club in Crimmitschau , which played in the GDR ice hockey championships as EHC Crimmitschau until it was re-established after the political change. The "Eispiraten", founded in 2007, are a professional team of the ETC Crimmitschau that has been outsourced as a limited liability company and is currently playing in the DEL2 . Under the parent club ETC Crimmitschau e. V. , the game operations of the youth and women's teams as well as the tennis department are organized.

The club colors are traditionally red and white, in recent years black has increasingly been added. The venue is the artificial ice stadium in the Sahnpark .

history

The beginnings in Crimmitschau ice sports

Ice hockey has a long tradition in Crimmitschau, with which the Sahnpark has always been closely linked as a nature park and recreation center for the population. An ice rink below today's ice rink was used by the population for ice skating in winter before the First World War . The ice meadow was leased to the cigar maker Heinrich Gans, who looked after the ice and borrowed ice skates.

The first attempts to set up an ice hockey team were made by the brothers Heinrich and Willy Otto. Willy Otto studied in Leipzig and played bandy in his free time . In 1919 he returned to Crimmitschau and introduced his brother Heinrich to this game. A special agreement was required with the tenant Heinrich Gans in order not to disrupt normal ice-skating operations.

The foundation of the EHC and first successes (1920 to 1938)

In 1920 the first ice hockey club EHC Crimmitschau was founded , which later enjoyed great popularity. Games were played on the ice meadow until 1922, in 1922 and 1923 on the gondola pond, in 1924 and 1925 on the frog pond in Mark Sahnau and from 1926 to 1945 on the paddling pool of the cream bath.

Horst Kutter played an essential role in Saxon ice hockey. A bronze sculpture in front of the entrance to the Sahnpark commemorates him.

The correct ice hockey game with a hard rubber disc was introduced in 1926/27. A year later, the EHC leased the paddling pool in winter, which was almost ideal for ice hockey. The pool was protected and a steep north slope was suitable for the creation of spectator trusses.

The EHC Crimmitschau celebrated its first successes as early as the thirties. In 1932, 1935 and 1936 the EHC won the Central German Championship, but at that time ice hockey was not yet highly regarded among the population and the club management had to advertise to get new players. A skating department was then set up, which gave the club a big boost. After the last win of the Central German Championship in 1936, the EHC was at the height of its history and was one of the best teams in Germany. Heinrich Otto was still the chairman of the association. That year the Crimmitschauer played in the preliminary round of the German championship, where they lost to SC Riessersee in Cologne . The youth department was also very successful at that time, for example it played its way into the final for the German youth champion in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and became runner-up.

In the 1936/37 season, the EHC merged with the local tennis club and was henceforth called ETC Crimmitschau. During these years, well-known teams such as the Berlin ice skating club , SC Charlottenburg or SC Riessersee played on the water surface in the Sahnbad . As Saxon guests, teams from Dresden, Chemnitz and local neighbor Frankenhausen were looking for a comparison.

In 1937/38 Heinrich and Willy Otto, as members of the board of the association, planned an artificial ice rink in the form of a stadium in the Sahnpark. They had presented the then mayor of Crimmitschau, Schmidt, with finished plans, and they had already secured the financing. This project failed due to concerns of the mayor before the Second World War ruined further efforts, because the Nazis also saw no use in an artificial ice stadium in Sahnpark.

After the Second World War, a team named BSG Textil Crimmitschau took part in the 1st winter sports championships in 1951. From the regular season 1950/51 onwards, teams from Crimmitschau played under the names BSG Textil Pleißengrund Crimmitschau (1951), BSG Turbine Crimmitschau (1953) and BSG Progress Crimmitschau in the former league, the first division or later in the second division. From 1958/59 the BSG Motor Crimmitschau took part in gaming operations. In 1960 the ASK Vorwärts Berlin had to move and played as ASK Vorwärts Crimmitschau as well as the ASG Vorwärts Crimmitschau below the army sports club . The various names - "turbine" belonged to the energy company, "progress" to the textile and leather industry, "forward" to the army and "unit" to the state administration - touched upon the origins of the supporters of the association at the time.

For the next decade, the club played under different names in the major league, establishing itself as number three in GDR ice hockey behind the ice hockey greats SC Dynamo Berlin and SG Dynamo Weißwasser . The team recorded the greatest successes in the cup. The West Saxons won the DELV Cup in 1966, 1967 and 1970 and came second four times in this competition. During this time, the team produced some national players. Among others, Peter Kolbe, Dieter Kraatzsch, Erhard Braun and Lothar Fuchs were in the GDR national team, which came third in the European Championship in 1966 . Dieter Röhl and Rolf Riedel also played in the GDR national team.

In the 1970/71 season it was decided to reduce the league to the two dynamo clubs from Berlin and Weißwasser. All other clubs were shut down and ice hockey was eliminated from the group of eligible sports. For this purpose, a determination of the best was introduced, in which the ASK “Forward” Crimmitschau became the BSG unit Crimmitschau. From 1971 to 1989 the BSG unit Crimmitschau determined the class as number 1 for many years and won the investigation in 1971, 1972, 1974 and 1980.

Already in the last weeks and months of the GDR a rethinking began at the DTSB and the Crimmitschauer were among the first to promote ice hockey in an initiative group in the GDR ice skating association. On December 4, 1989, the association decided to set up a third GDR performance center in Crimmitschau and to accept Crimmitschau into the GDR upper league, which, however, no longer came about. After the political change , the name "EHC" was reverted to February 7, 1990 and it was finally founded on May 3, 1990 under the name Ice Hockey and Tennis Club Crimmitschau .

↑ Ascent

The first game of the ETC Crimmitschau after the re-establishment in spring 1990 was a test match against SV Hof. The team around captain Ralf Heinicke - who later became the coach of the women's team of ETC Crimmitschau - was able to win this game 14: 2 and thus ensured a successful opening of the history of the ETC after the fall of the Wall.

In autumn 1990, the ETC Crimmitschau took part in the official game operation in the Bayernliga for the first time. The first competitive opponent of the season was SV Gendorf , who were defeated 5: 4. At the end of the season, the team was eighth in the table and had to take part in the relegation, which they mastered confidently and won with 17: 3 points.

In the following season, the ETC Crimmitschau under the new captain Rainer Steinbock was able to score 125 goals in 18 games and ranked first in the table at the end of the season and in the subsequent promotion round to the regional league, the season was crowned with promotion. Due to the high number of spectators in the Crimmitschauer Sahnpark, the city became a household name for many ice hockey fans in Germany. Up to 6,000 spectators flocked to the home games, which were remarkable figures even in high-class German ice hockey.

In the 1994/95 season, he was promoted to the Hacker-Pschorr League. In this league - which repeatedly appeared under different names due to changes to the game system and sponsorship agreements - the ETC held up until the 2000/01 season. This season, the two promoted players to the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga were determined in playoffs, in which the players of the ETC Crimmitschau first defeated the Adendorfer EC with 3-0 wins and in the second round the ESC Dresden with 3-1 wins. In the third round, however, it was not possible to prevail against the EHC Wolfsburg , but on June 30, 2001 it was decided at a league conference that the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga should be increased from 12 to 14 clubs, which means that the ETC Crimmitschau and EV Duisburg moved up.

In the seasons 2001/2002 to 2004/05 , the professional team of the ETC Crimmitschau initially played in the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga . Right in the debut season, the Saxons were able to celebrate the greatest success in the club's history with fifth place and entry into the playoffs, but failed in the quarter-finals to the Heilbronner Falken .

From the 2002/03 season , the club was nicknamed "Ice Pirates". However, the successful first season could not be continued, so that at the end of the preliminary round only 15th place was on the books. In the play-down round, a 3-1 win against the favored Fischtown Pinguins ultimately helped them stay up. A year later, the “ice pirates” dared to change. With Manfred Wolf a new coach was hired, who shaped the game system North American. However, there were no successes, so that Wolf had to leave again in the fall and was replaced by Jiří Ehrenberger . Under him, the club played more successfully again and the team finally managed to stay in the relegation round. In the 2004/05 season , expectations rose in the Crimmitschauer environment, but had to start after fifth place in the relegation round after four years of second division, the gang in the league .

In the 2005/06 season the ETC succeeded under the new coach Gunnar Leidborg after first place in the main round, third place in the championship round and three wins each in the playoffs against the Blue Devils Weiden and EV Ravensburg, the immediate promotion to the 2nd ice hockey -Bundesliga .

The following season put the club to a tough test. It was already clear at the beginning of the season that the financial problems would have to be contained by making savings on the squad. In December 2006 it was announced that an impending bankruptcy can hardly be averted, which mobilized the fans of the ETC Crimmitschau to save “their” club. From auctions or private donations to the season game of the ice pirates against the Dresdner Eislöwen on December 29, 2006 under the motto "Mission 5555", in which at least 5,555 spectators should see the game - to which 6,530 spectators came - everything was tried, the ETC To keep Crimmitschau alive. The sum of all these campaigns and large donations from private individuals, companies and the city of Crimmitschau brought the rescue in spring 2007. A donation board at the stadium on which each donor is mentioned by name commemorates this one-off campaign.

In terms of sport, the season could be concluded with relegation. Despite a 1: 3 deficit in the best-of-seven series, ETC Crimmitschau was still able to turn the series and - exactly two years to the day after relegation in Kaufbeuren - won the series with a 5-0 victory with 4: 3 and thus kept the class.

Despite major financial problems in the summer of 2007, the debt of 711,000 euros was repaid, so that the establishment of the "Eispiraten-GmbH" was made possible. Since the 2007/08 season , the professional team has been playing under the direction of Eispiraten Crimmitschau GmbH and started with the lowest budget of all league players. After an eighth place after the preliminary round, the team reached the quarter-finals of the playoff round, but failed there in the best-of-seven series against the eventual champions Kassel Huskies . In economic terms, the season ended with a "black zero". The women's and junior teams continue to play under the parent club ETC Crimmitschau.

The Eispiraten started the 2008/09 season with the lowest budget in the 2nd Bundesliga . There the team only reached 13th and last place in the table. The subsequent play down round was not played because during the season the Tölzer Löwen a bankruptcy petition presented prematurely and thus the only relegated firmly stood. When licensing for the 2009/10 season , the Eispiraten were initially granted the license subject to conditions, but from the ESBG's point of view these could not be fulfilled, so that the license was refused to the West Saxony for the time being. After an objection by those responsible for the ice pirates before the DEB court, the West Saxons were finally proven to have fulfilled the license conditions and were granted the right to play in the 2nd Bundesliga. Thus, the ice pirates went into the season with a total budget of 1.2 million euros and calculated with 1950 spectators per home game, which was slightly exceeded. In terms of sport, the team finished the season in twelfth place in the table. In the subsequent playdown round, the ice pirates secured their league prematurely with 4-1 wins against the Hanover Indians . The 2010/11 season started successfully for the team with six wins from ten games - on matchday 11 the team played for 1st place. As a result, the ice pirates around captain Kevin Saurette played for a pre-playoff place, but at the end of the main round they took twelfth and penultimate place in front of the Lausitzer Füchsen . The subsequent round of relegation against the foxes and the wolves Freiburg was finished in second place, which meant the direct relegation.

For the 2011/12 season , the team was changed in most positions. Under the also newly signed coach Fabian Dahlem , the ice pirates reached tenth place at the end of the main round, but were able to secure relegation early in the following round of relegation. The goal for the following season was the entry into the playoffs, which was missed by one point and the ice pirates finished the finals in 9th place. Due to the insolvency of the Hannover Indians , the playdowns were not held. Due to the lockout in 2012/13 , three NHL strikers - Wayne Simmonds , Chris Stewart and Clarke MacArthur - joined the Westsachsen on loan for some games , which was a unique event in the club's history to date.

In the 2015/16 season, the ice pirates, led by Chris Lee , who took over as head coach in 2014, reached the championship round of the DEL2 , after having mostly been relegated in previous years. In December 2016, the club separated from Lee after the team slipped to penultimate place in the table. John Tripp took over the coaching position, but was replaced as head coach by Kim Collins after the end of the 2016/17 season . From October 2017 he was supported by Jacek Płachta . In the 2017/18 season, Collins led the team to the playoff quarter-finals. At the end of January 2019, Collins was fired as a result of a 9-1 defeat. After initially youth coach Boris Rousson stepped in as a transition coach , Daniel Naud was hired as the new head coach shortly afterwards .

Jersey design and equipment

Home shirt 2008/09
Home shirt from the front   Home shirt from the back
Away shirt 2008/09
Away shirt from the front   Away shirt from behind

The ice pirates traditionally play in the colors black, red and white. Like all other teams, two different shirt designs will be used for the games. Following the example of the National Hockey League , the darker jerseys are used for home games and the lighter ones for away games. In the case of the Eispiraten, at home games this is the conventional red as the basic color, which is also found in the club colors. For the away games, the players wear the lighter - mostly white jerseys. The forearms and sides are set off in black in both layouts and the chest and shoulder areas are equipped with the sponsors.

In addition, a separate jersey is used for warming, which is predominantly black and is not based on the existing layout. The trousers of the players are traditionally black, for both home and away games. The socks are kept in the basic color of the jersey worn.

The jersey layout varies with each season and is designed in collaboration with the fans.

Until 2011 player of the ETC. He took the captain's role for years and is currently number 1 in the internal scorer ranking. The south-east curve of the ice rink also bears his name in fan circles (the so-called Heine curve ). From the 2011/12 season, his shirt with the number was pulled under the roof in his honor.
With his goals and assists one of the guarantors for an immediate promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. Klinge was a national player and a regular at Adler Mannheim .

Next to Petr Heidinger, the icon for the Crimmitschauer ice hockey rebirth after the re-establishment. With a total of 171 goals, he still leads the ETC scorer's ranking.

Stefan Steinbock is a native of Crimmitschau ice hockey. Coming from the DEL, he acted as the team's captain for years and, after retiring from his career, served the club as head of marketing. His jersey with the number 10 has graced the hall roof ever since.

Since the club was re-established in 1990, the club has employed a large number of coaches, of which Horymír Sekera was the longest with three full seasons.

As the first coach after the re-establishment, Dieter Kraatzsch stood as a coach behind the gang and after the Bayern League championship in 1991/92 he was promoted to the regional league. There he was replaced by Rolf Bielas, as a coaching license was required for the regional league and Dieter Kraatzsch did not have one. For the 1993/94 season, the former GDR national player Reinhardt Fengler took over as player-coach.

After promotion to the Hacker Pschorr League, Klaus Schröder took over the position of head coach from Reinhardt Fengler as the DEB-U17 selection coach at the time. His commitment had become necessary because there were no longer any player-coaches in the first division. Due to unsuccessfulness, Schröder had to give up his position at the beginning of the 1997/98 season to the Canadian Craig Sarner, who in turn had to make way for Horymír Sekera at the end of the season.

Promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga and direct playoff participation was achieved under Sekera. After relatively short coaching posts for Paul Sommer, Manfred Wolf and Jiří Ehrenberger, Gunnar Leidborg came to Saxony after relegation to the league in the 2005/06 season. He achieved immediate promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga and held the class in the following season. After a successful 2007/08 season, Leidborg announced his retirement.

For the 2008/09 season, Sergei Svetlow should stand behind the gang and train the ice pirates for two years. A week before the start of the season, however, he accepted an offer as an assistant coach for the KHL club Lada Tolyatti and turned his back on the ice pirates.

Doug Irwin was hired as his successor, but he was replaced by Wayne Hynes in November 2008 due to unsuccessfulness . After 1 ½ seasons on the ice pirate gang, the contract with Hynes was not renewed at the end of the 2009/10 season. Larry Suarez , who led the team until November 2010, was presented as his successor on July 15, 2010 . Due to persistent sporting failures, Suarez was on leave on November 27, 2010 and replaced by Steffen Ziesche - who was already in charge of the ice pirates' season preparation. The pre-playoff round was not reached under the new coach, but in the end the league was on the books at the end of the season. Ziesche had received an offer for a further engagement with the Saxons, he finally decided on the post of sporting director and trainer at the Eisbären Juniors Berlin . Fabian Dahlem was introduced as his successor on May 12, 2011 . His contract was not renewed after the 2013/2014 season and Dahlem was replaced by Chris Lee . In December 2016, Lee was released due to the negative sporting development. At the time of the split, the Eispiraten were penultimate of the DEL2. The following on Chris Lee John Tripp could not improve the performance of the team, so they parted after a disappointing 14th place after the end of the season. Before the start of the 2017/2018 season, Kim Collins was introduced as the new head coach.

Parent club

The parent club - the ETC Crimmitschau e. V. - was founded in 1990 and combines an ice hockey and a tennis department. The ice hockey department is divided into numerous junior teams and a women's team.

In the 2004/05 season, the team was champions in the league and was allowed - after some disagreements due to the declared waiver of promotion to the women's Bundesliga - again in 2005/06 participate in the league, which they successfully finish in 2006/07 with second place could. In the 2007/08 season, the women took fourth place behind the team from Weisswasser with the same number of points. The 2008/09 season was one of the most successful for the women's ice hockey team. After the championship in the first women's league north / east was celebrated prematurely, the team around coach Ralf Heinicke won the trophy of the north-east round. Here all competitive games were won.

State performance center

Since 2007, the Central Germany Youth Training Center has officially been located in Crimmitschau. The aim is to secure the sporting development and support as well as the coordination of sporting and school training. This will be realized in the medium term by two full-time young trainers. Each junior team has six ice times a week at their disposal. This is done through a cooperation in Schönheide and Chemnitz , in the long term a second ice surface is to be created directly in Crimmitschau. Sponsors and local companies are involved to safeguard training positions. Some players have already successfully completed their apprenticeship in Crimmitschau. In order to meet the high requirements at all times, there is close cooperation with the regional association.

The artificial ice stadium in the Sahnpark was built in 1964 to further promote professional ice sports in Crimmitschau. In the history of the GDR, games of the GDR national team took place every now and then, which were attended by up to 10,000 spectators.

In 1994 the stadium underwent a renovation and was given a roof, which increased the ice quality and the comfort for the fans. The city took a major step towards modernization in 2002 with the installation of the large grandstand above the players' benches. There is space for almost 100 spectators and the grandstand has a glazed kiosk, which also offers a view of the ice surface.

By 2010 the stadium had standing room for 6535, as part of a further extensive renovation and the construction of a new cabin wing, the capacity was reduced to 5222 seats, including 121 seats, 56 VIP seats and ten press seats.

The ice rink is used daily by the professional team, the junior teams, the women's team, various hobby teams and for public ice skating. The theoretical utilization of the area is higher than the practical schedule allows, which for example encourages youth teams to train in one of the partner cities.

Fan choreography before the game

The ice pirate fans are organized in numerous fan clubs that are spread across Germany. The best known is the formation of the Kultras , who position themselves in the southeast curve - the "Heinekurve" - and regularly organize choreographies.

In addition, the fans maintain loose friendships with various ice hockey clubs such as the Schwenninger Wild Wings , the Kassel Huskies or the ESV Bayreuth . A rivalry existed due to the geographical proximity to the ERC Selb and the 1. EV Weiden , but this has decreased due to the different leagues affiliation. The same applies to EV Regensburg , which is based on their shared sporting past - around the turn of the millennium, both clubs played for years in the same league for the top spots. The "Sachsen-Derbies" against the Lausitzer Füchse are particularly explosive , in which an increased security effort on the part of the security and police should separate both fan camps from each other. Despite numerous clashes in recent years, there have only been isolated attacks to which those responsible at both clubs reacted.

Furthermore, the fans of the ETC Crimmitschau hold the record for the longest fan song in the world. On January 6, 1999 they set a new record with an 84-minute uninterrupted fan song in the game against ESV Bayreuth , which resulted in an entry in the Guinness Book of Records .

Partnerships

As part of the funding license program , the Eispiraten Crimmitschau had partnerships with the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg , the Kassel Huskies and the DEG Metro Stars from the German Ice Hockey League , the Saale Bulls Halle and the EHV Schönheide from the Regionalliga-Ost for the 2009/10 season . The aim of the program is to promote and coach young players so that they can gain gaming experience. For the 2010/11 season, the contract with the Grizzly Adams and EHV Schönheide was extended. In addition, those responsible signed a cooperation with the Eisbären Berlin and Hamburg Freezers to give other young players the chance to develop further in ice hockey. Since the ESBG and the DEL could not agree on a cooperation agreement for the 2011/12 season, the partnership with the upper-class clubs had to be discontinued with regard to the exchange of promotional licensed players. After there was a cooperation with the ERV Chemnitz 07 in the youth sector last year , the ETC Crimmitschau will continue to work with the EHV Schönheide and Fortuna Leipzig from the 2011/12 season .

mascot

An ice pirate has graced the club's logo since the 2002/03 season and also acts as a mascot. From October 9th, 2009 the club will be represented by a pirate named “Crimmel” - namesake and godfather was the former referee and Crimmitschauer crowd favorite Josef Krimmel  . In addition, he steps onto the ice before home games and gets the fans in the mood for the game.
