Player career

Kuhnke was already on the ice at the age of three and began playing ice hockey at TSC Berlin in 1965 . He played there for five years before the GDR sports leadership greatly reduced support for ice hockey in the country and the club had to retreat. Kuhnke decided to continue his career and then switched to SC Dynamo Berlin. Associated with the change was the attendance of the children's and youth sports school, where he attended a class with his later teammates Detlef Radant or Frank Proske . At the age of 19, the striker made his debut in the men's team of SC Dynamo in the 1976/77 season and reached the GDR championship in his first year . He was able to celebrate a total of nine championships and, with Detlef Radant and Frank Proske, formed one of the most successful assault series in GDR ice hockey history, responsible for a total of 258 goals in 16 seasons.

With the political change and the re-establishment of the EHC Dynamo Berlin , Kuhnke remained in the squad of the Bundesliga club. Despite a valid contract with the now renamed Eisbären, he played no role in coach Walter Köberle's plans for the 1993/94 season , so that he only got ice ages again with Marshall Kennedy's engagement . After the season there was a change to EC Hannover , which made the leap into the newly founded German Ice Hockey League for the 1994/95 season . In the 1996/97 season , a thrombosis finally forced the striker to retire. In total, Kuhnke played 262 Bundesliga and DEL games, scoring 55 goals and 72 assists.

Together with Dietmar Peters and Rainer Patschinski , the striker sporadically laced his ice skates for the Saaleteufel Halle until 2000 , thus ending his active career in the Landesliga Sachsen. For his services in German ice hockey, Kuhnke was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Germany .

With the offspring, promotion to the league was achieved and Kuhnke was responsible for the successful team, which produced numerous DEL and national team players. In 2004 Kuhnke left the Eisbären Juniors and signed a contract with ESC Erfurt from the Regionalliga Ost . At ECC Preussen Juniors Berlin he took over the coaching position for one season in 2006/07 , but did not get past the penultimate place with the team.

From April 11, 2008 Kuhnke was the trainer of the youngsters of the ETC Crimmitschau and responsible for the youth and the school team. After the 2008/09 season, he handed over the student team to Sven Schröder and, in addition to the youth Bundesliga team, primarily succeeded Manfred Wolf as coach of the junior team.
