Walter Köberle (born January 13, 1949 in Kaufbeuren ) is a former German ice hockey player and coach , who spent most of his career at Düsseldorfer EG , for which he also worked as co and head coach. Köberle won the German championship twice with DEG and in 1976 won the bronze medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck with the national ice hockey team. He has been sporting director at DEG since 2012.

Player career

Köberle made his senior debut in the 1965/66 season at ESV Kaufbeuren , for which he played for six years - two of them in the 2nd Bundesliga . For the 1971/72 season he joined the Düsseldorfer EG , which celebrated its second German championship after 1967 this season . Three years later, Köberle was able to celebrate his second championship with the Düsseldorf team. The Kaufbeurer was one of the DEG's audience favorites. The national player should experience the highlight of his ice hockey career, so he won the bronze medal under the then national coach Xaver Unsinn at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck .

For this he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf - together with the German Olympic ice hockey team.

For the 1981/82 season, Köberle switched to DEG's big rival - the Cologne EC, for which he only played one season, only to return to DEG and end his career there in 1983.

In addition to the two championships, Köberle was also able to win three runner-up championships with the Düsseldorf team in 1973, 1980 and 1981. He is the tenth most successful points collector in the history of the Düsseldorf club.

After retirement

After his active career as a player, Köberle worked for many years in the DEG youth team. In 1991, together with Friedhelm Raspel, he published the book “Ice Hockey - From Junior to Champion” ( ISBN 3-7919-0443-4 ). In August 1993, Köberle was announced as the new head coach of the Eisbären Berlin , but had to resign before the start of the season for health reasons.

After DEG returned to the top German league in 2000/01 - after a two-year stint in the second division that ended with the championship in 2000 - Köberle became assistant coach of the Düsseldorfer EG under Gerhard Brunner .

In October 2004 he took over the position of head coach for three games until he was replaced by Butch Goring , who had become German champion in 2003 with the Krefeld Penguins . For the 2005/06 season , Köberle was promoted to the new role of team leader, which he has held since then and which enabled him to win the runner-up in 2006 and 2009 and the DEB Cup with DEG in 2006. In his role, Köberle organized, among other things, away trips and took care of the players' concerns. In January 2012 Walter Köberle was appointed sports director of DEG and succeeded Lance Nethery .

On January 13, 2013, Köberle was honored by the Düsseldorfer EG for his work as a functionary and player. A banner was installed on the ceiling of the ISS cathedral, its jersey number 13 will never be awarded again.
