The 1981/82 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 24th season of the highest German ice hockey league and the last for the time being, which was played with twelve teams. The reduction to ten teams meant that in addition to the teams that had to go to the relegation round, two clubs, ERC Freiburg and VfL Bad Nauheim, were also relegated directly to the 2nd Bundesliga . The German champion was SB Rosenheim , who prevailed in the play-offs against the favorites Landshut , Cologne or Mannheim , who were better placed in the preliminary round , and thus won their first championship. The 16-time champions EV Füssen and the Schwenninger ERC were able to secure relegation in the relegation round.
The German record champions Berliner SC , however, had to withdraw from the Bundesliga for financial reasons. For the Berliners, the ECD Iserlohn returned as fourth in the relegation round in the 1st Bundesliga after the third-placed Duisburger SC had renounced promotion.

mode
After a double round, the best eight teams played the German champions in the play-offs . All rounds continued to be played in the " best-of-three " mode. However, there were changes in the relegation regulation. The Bundesliga should be downgraded to ten clubs in the following season , so that the last two teams were relegated directly to the second division after the preliminary round. In addition, the relegation round was reintroduced, in which the ninth and tenth places in the 1st Bundesliga met the best four teams in the 2nd Bundesliga. The first two teams of the relegation round, which was played in a single round, qualified for the new first division season.
