Pavel Wohl (born January 5, 1942 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak ice hockey player and coach . As a trainer, he was two German champions with SB Rosenheim .

Career

Of all the great Czech coaches who were successful in the Bundesliga, Pavel Wohl was probably the weakest ice hockey player. From 1959 to 1974 he was goalkeeper for Tatra Smichov , ASD Dukla Jihlava and Spartak Hradec Králové , but played most of his 370 games for Sparta Prague . He was allowed to play a few games in the B national team. But his heyday followed as a coach.

He was one of the greatest theorists and so he delivered his doctoral thesis on the subject of "reaction time for goalkeepers". Until 1980 he trained next to VTZ Chomutov and HC Sparta Prague also the Czechoslovak junior national team. In 1980 he took over SB Rosenheim . Here, his knowledge helped him to lead the team with conviction rather than harshness. He was instrumental in the rise of Karl Friesen to a world-class player. In 1982 he surprisingly won the German championship with the Rosenheimers, the second title win in 1985 was expected earlier. After the second success he was called back to the CSSR. He coached HC Sparta Prague for three more years before he took over as head coach of the Czechoslovak national ice hockey team in 1988 . Twice he led the team to a world championship bronze medal. After a short stay in Zurich SC he returned to HC Sparta Praha and won back with the team in 1993 championship . He was voted coach of the year four times in his home country.
