The A group of the 54th ice hockey world championship and 65th men's ice hockey European championship in 1990 was held in Bern and Friborg in Switzerland . 28 teams took part in the A-WM and the three other tournaments. There were no changes to the mode of competition this year.

The USSR won its 22nd world title and showed that it had learned from past mistakes. In 1985 and 1987 , after a sovereign preliminary round, she had gambled away her title in the final round. This time the Soviets were only in third place after the preliminary round, but then played big in the final round and safely won the championship. This time, the victims of the competition mode were the Canadians who, as the winners of the preliminary round, went home without a medal. The Swedes were also allowed to cheer ; not only were they runner-up, but their victory over the USSR and their second place in the preliminary round behind Canada gave them their tenth European title.

For the first time, a women's ice hockey world championship was held this year. The first World Cup tournament was held from 19 to 25 March in Ottawa in Canada instead. The championship was held with 8 teams, Canada became the first women world champion .
