Jeffrey Thomas Norton (born November 25, 1965 in Acton , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 862 games for the New York Islanders , San Jose Sharks , St. Louis Blues , Edmonton Oilers , Tampa Bay Lightning , Florida Panthers , Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . His younger brother Brad Norton was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Norton first played three years from 1984 to 1987 at the University of Michigan in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . During this time he had already been selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1984 in the third round in 62nd position by the New York Islanders from the National Hockey League . His outstanding final year at college earned him - in addition to the nomination for the CCHA Second All-Star Team - an invitation to the US national team , which was to prepare for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Calgary for the entire 1987/88 season . Norton finally made the leap into the team roster and thus took part in the Olympic ice hockey tournament.
After the Winter Games, the defender signed a contract with the New York Islanders in the NHL and ran in 15 games in the 1987/88 season for the club. The Americans remained until the summer of 1993 the franchise from Long Iceland , where he much of the season 1991/92 missed because of a hip injury. After that, his journey through the NHL began. He first played with the San Jose Sharks from October 1993 to March 1995 , then was transferred to the St. Louis Blues , where he stayed until January 1996. A transfer deal followed that took him to the Edmonton Oilers . This gave him in March 1997 to the Tampa Bay Lightning . Norton only stayed there until January 1998, before he was transferred to the Florida Panthers . In November 1998 Norton turned his back on the Panthers and moved back to San Jose, where he was already under contract in the 1993/94 and 1994/95 seasons . However, the American only stayed with the Californians until the end of the 1999/00 season . As a free agent , he signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in November 2000 , but they sent him back to San Jose in March 2001. Norton played there for the rest of the season, only to sign again with the Florida Panthers for the 2000/01 season . A knee injury early in the season forced him to take a long break, but that didn't stop the Boston Bruins from signing him in March 2001 for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs . After the Bruins were eliminated from the playoffs, Norton ended his 15-year NHL career and let his active career fade away in the 2002/03 season with Frisk Asker in the Norwegian Eliteserien .
In total, Norton played for eight different NHL franchises and changed teams ten times during his career. Notable players who have been involved in transfer deals with Norton include Craig Janney , Dino Ciccarelli and Johan Hedberg . His best NHL season was in the 1989/90 season when he scored 53 points in 60 games for the Islanders.
International
In addition to his participation in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary , Canada , in which the Americans took seventh place, Norton was also part of the American squad at the World Championships in 1989 in Sweden and 1990 in Switzerland . With places 6 and 5 in the final ranking, he was also denied winning a medal there.
