Johan Hedberg (born May 5, 1973 in Leksand ) is a former Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who has been an assistant coach for the San Jose Sharks since July 2015 .

Career

Johan Hedberg began his career in the youth department of Leksands IF , for whose U18 team he played in the U18 junior series from 1987. Between 1989 and 1992 he was active for the U20 juniors of the club before he was promoted from the professional team to Åke Lilljebjörn's substitute goalkeeper before the 1992/93 season . He completed a total of 13 appearances in his first Elitserien season and achieved the best catch quota of all goalkeepers in the league in the preliminary and intermediate rounds.

Europe and Minor Leagues

During the 1994 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the ninth round, 218th overall, by the Philadelphia Flyers . Hedberg stayed with his hometown club, however, as the Flyers didn't want to bring him to North America until he made the leap to the national team. In the summer of 1997, he left his hometown club to make his own entry into North American ice hockey. By then he had played a total of 116 games for Leksands IF, in which he achieved a Goals Against Average of 2.79. With the Baton Rouge Kingfish from the East Coast Hockey League , he found his first club in North America, for which he completed two games. He then worked for the Detroit Vipers and the Manitoba Moose in the International Hockey League before the Flyers Hedbergs NHL rights in August 1998 to the San Jose Sharks . Since the Sharks had a large number of hopeful goalkeeping talents, Hedberg decided in 1998 to return to his home club. During the 1998/99 season he reached the intermediate round of the European Hockey League with Leksands IF and was statistically one of the best goalkeepers in the competition.

Promotion to the National Hockey League

In the summer of 1999, the Sharks brought him back to North America and subsequently used him on their farm team , the Kentucky Thoroughblades from the American Hockey League . In the following season Hedberg was the goalkeeper of the Manitoba Moose and his above-average style of play caught the attention of Eddie Johnston , then Assistant General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins . In March 2001, Hedberg learned on the airport of Winnipeg by Randy Carlyle , the former coach of the Moose that it - along with Bobby Dollas - The Pittsburgh Penguins have committed. Then Hedberg was not sent to the farm team, but immediately assigned to the Penguins' NHL squad. Two days later he made his debut for his new franchise in the National Hockey League . Until the start of the play-offs a few weeks later, he completed eight more games and was the goalkeeper of the Penguins in the subsequent play-offs. In these, Hedberg and his team reached the Eastern Conference final.

Goalkeeper in the National Hockey League

In the following two seasons he completed 66 and 41 games of the main round for the Penguins, before he was signed in August 2003 by the Vancouver Canucks , who in return gave the Penguins a draft right for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft . The following season he was Dan Cloutier's back-up at the Canucks and scored 2.51 goals against in 21 games. Due to the lockout in the 2004/05 season , Hedberg returned to Europe and completed some games for his home club, which now played in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan . With the Leksands IF he made it back to the Elitserien in the Kvalserien . He then returned to North America and, as he had no valid NHL contract, was signed as a free agent by the Dallas Stars . In the Stars he made 19 appearances behind goalkeeper Marty Turco . In July 2006, Hedberg signed a two-year contract with the Atlanta Thrashers and then acted as a back-up for Kari Lehtonen . During the 2007/08 season, Lehtonen was seriously injured, so Hedberg was the first goalkeeper for the Thrashers. In June 2008 the Thrashers and Hedberg agreed on a contract extension until 2010. During the 2009/10 season , he shared the post of goalkeeper with Ondřej Pavelec . Although Hedberg performed well (91.5% catch quota, 2.62 GAA) he did not receive a new offer from the Thrashers after his contract expired. Therefore, Hedberg left the Thrashers in July 2010 after four years of franchise membership and was signed by the New Jersey Devils .

With the Devils, he was another three seasons in the NHL line-up before he came to only one use with the Albany Devils in the AHL in the 2013/14 season . He then ended his active career and was taken over directly by the Albany Devils as goalkeeping coach. After the 2014/15 season, the San Jose Sharks signed him as a goalkeeper and assistant coach under Peter DeBoer .

International

Johan Hedberg received his first appointment for the Swedish national team in the run-up to the 1994 World Cup , in which he was the third goalkeeper without a commitment, but won the bronze medal with the team. Two years later he took part with the national team at the World Cup of Hockey 1996 , but was again only a substitute goalkeeper. At the 1997 World Cup , Hedberg was Tommy Salo's back-up , played one game and won the silver medal with the Tre Kronors .

In 1998, Hedberg took part in his first Winter Olympics, was again substitute goalkeeper for Tommy Salo and remained without use during the tournament. At the world championship in the same year , Hedberg received a chance to play and won the gold medal with the national team at the end of the tournament. A year later, at the 1999 World Cup , he won another bronze medal, being the third goalkeeper behind Salo and Petter Rönnquist to receive only one minute of ice time during the tournament.

At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , Hedberg was again part of the Swedish Olympic squad, came to a mission and took fifth place with the selection team.

Nickname

Johan Hedberg is given two nicknames: "Moose" and occasionally "Yo-Yo". He got the nickname "Moose" when he was briefly used as a goalkeeper for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2001, but still wore the helmet of the Manitoba Moose . The helmet was labeled Moose , so that fans of the Penguins could call out Hedberg Moose after every parade , which was often misunderstood as Boo .

Achievements and Awards

Records

On December 26, 2005, Hedberg scored two assists in the game against the St. Louis Blues . He is the first goalkeeper in the history of the Dallas Stars to have two assists in one game - the last NHL goalkeeper to do that was Patrick Roy in December 2000.
