Ondřej Pavelec (born August 31, 1987 in Kladno , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey goalkeeper . Between 2007 and 2018 he played more than 400 games in the National Hockey League , most of which was for the franchise of the Atlanta Thrashers and Winnipeg Jets . He spent his last season with the New York Rangers . With the Czech national team he won the gold medal at the 2010 World Cup .
Career
Pavelec was elected in the first round in eleventh position of the CHL Import Draft 2005 by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Québec Major Junior Hockey League and during the NHL Entry Draft 2005 in the second round as the 41st player overall by the Atlanta Thrashers . The Czech was appointed to the QMJHL First All-Star Team in his two years with the Eagles. He also won the Jacques Plante Trophy as a goalkeeper with the fewest goals conceded per game in 2006 and 2007. He was only the fourth player to do so twice in a row. He also won the Trophée Raymond Lagacé and the Coupe RDS , which is awarded to the best defensive rookie and the best rookie of the year .
In the summer of 2007 Pavelec received a professional contract with the Atlanta Thrashers . After he had played two games for the farm team of the Thrashers from the American Hockey League , the Chicago Wolves , Pavelec was ordered into the NHL squad of Atlantas due to an injury to Kari Lehtonen . On October 20, 2007 he made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Thrashers. In his first season for Atlanta he came on seven missions and won the 2008 Calder Cup with the Chicago Wolves . With the Thrashers, the Czech moved to Winnipeg in 2011, where the team henceforth operated as Winnipeg Jets .
After a total of 10 years in the Atlanta or Winnipeg franchise, his contract was not extended after the 2016/17 season, so that Pavelec joined the New York Rangers in July 2017 . There he fulfilled a one-year contract, which was not extended in the summer of 2018 either. Subsequently, the Czech did not receive a new offer from the NHL, so he ended his career at the age of 31.
At the Junior World Championships in 2005 , Pavelec finished fourth with the U18 national team of the Czech Republic. Two years later, at the U20 World Cup in 2007 , Pavelec was the goalkeeper of the Czech U20 team, which finished fifth in the tournament.
