The 2016/17 season was the 81st season of the American Hockey League (AHL). During the regular season, which ran from October 14, 2016 to April 15, 2017, the 30 teams in the league played 76 or 68 matches. This was followed by the playoffs for the Calder Cup , which the Grand Rapids Griffins won for the second time in their history .

Changes

Teams

The new teams for the 2016/17 season; same colors correspond to belonging to a division.

The Springfield Falcons moved to Tucson in the state of Arizona and operate there as Tucson Roadrunners from now on . The Roadrunners fill the Pacific Division , which was introduced last year , to eight teams, in which the majority of the teams continue to play only 68 instead of 76 games in the regular season. The place of the Falcons was taken by the Portland Pirates , who moved to Springfield and henceforth take part in gaming operations as Springfield Thunderbirds .

In addition, the Lake Erie Monsters changed their name to Cleveland Monsters .

regulate

This year's rule changes mainly relate to fistfighting. Players who start a fistfight immediately after face-off are immediately excluded from the game (game misconduct) . In addition, automatic bans have been introduced after a certain number of fistfights: After the tenth to the 13th fistfight penalty, the player concerned receives a ban for one game, with the 14th and each subsequent penalty a ban for two games. Fights in which the opponent in question received an instigator penalty are not included in this statistic.

In addition, the defending team is no longer allowed to use their time-out after an icing .

mode

The mode essentially corresponds to that of the previous year . Since the respective divisions of both conferences now have the same number of teams (Eastern Conference: 7 each; Western Conference: 8 each), the playoff qualification of a fifth division is no longer possible. This should only take into account the unequal distribution of teams in the previous year.
