Casey DeSmith was born in Rochester and attended Berwick Academy and Deerfield Academy , two prestigious private schools, for whose ice hockey teams he played in regional high school teams. For the 2009/10 season he moved to the Indiana Ice in the United States Hockey League (USHL), the highest-ranking junior league in the United States. He was active in Indiana for two years before returning to his home country and enrolling at the University of New Hampshire . For their Wildcats , he ran from then on in the Hockey East , a league of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and recorded as a rookie a catch rate of 92.6%, so he was elected to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team . Then the American rose to the regular goalkeeper in New Hampshire and confirmed his achievements from his freshman year, but without being considered in an NHL entry draft .

Following an August 2014 incident, DeSmith was suspended from the University of New Hampshire on suspicion of domestic violence against his significant other. Although the allegations against him were dropped during a hearing (apart from disorderly conduct ) and he was allowed to return to college as a student, he remained banned from the Wildcats' gaming operations. As a result, the goalkeeper did not play a competitive game in the 2014/15 season, while the NCAA subsequently denied him to spend his fourth year of college in the following season at another university, so DeSmith switched to professional business in the 2015/16 season and the Wheeling Nailers from ECHL joined.

Pittsburgh Penguins

DeSmith was convincing at the Wheeling Nailers, so that he was used for the first time in December 2015 in the higher-ranking American Hockey League (AHL) with the cooperation partner of the Nailers, the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins . Both teams act as respective farm teams of the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League (NHL). For the season 2016/17 the goalkeeper established in Wilkes-Barre / Scranton and won together with his teammates Tristan Jarry the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award as the best Torhüterduo Gegentorschnitt while in addition to the AHL All-Rookie Team was selected . As a result, DeSmith signed an NHL entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in July 2017 . He finally made his debut in the highest league in North America in October 2017 and has been there regularly - often alternating with Tristan Jarry - as a backup for Matt Murray . He was also represented at the AHL All-Star Classic 2018. With the beginning of the 2018/19 season, he prevailed in the competition against Jarry and spent the entire season in the NHL lineup of the Penguins.
