Franz Zehrer

Franz Zehrer (born January 7, 1911 in Eisenerz ; † February 6, 1992 in Graz ) was an Austrian Catholic priest and theologian (New Testament), church musician and organ expert .

Life

Franz Zehrer studied theology at the University of Graz from 1932 to 1935 and was ordained a priest in 1935. In addition, he received musical training from Anton Faist and Rudolf Weis-Ostborn. After years of chaplaincy, he studied at the Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra in Rome from 1939 and received his doctorate there in 1943. From 1944 to 1953 he was professor of counterpoint and classical vocal polyphony at the Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra. He also studied at the Pontificio Istituto Biblico and was awarded a Dr. theol. doctorate, in 1951 he received his habilitation there for the subject New Testament ( The psalms quotations in the letters of St. Paul), In 1953 he obtained the Lic. Rer. bibl.

In 1951 he became an adjunct to the chair for the New Testament at the University of Graz, where he was an associate professor in 1953 , and from 1957 to 1981 he was a full professor for the New Testament. In the academic year 1957/58 he was dean and 1967/68 rector of the university. From 1953 to 1986 he was organ and bell speaker of the diocese of Graz-Seckau , since 1957 the correspondent of the Federal Monuments Office for organ issues.
