Franz Karl Praßl

Franz Karl Praßl (born September 28, 1954 in Feldbach ) is an Austrian theologian, church musician and composer.

Life

Praßl studied Catholic theology (doctorate in 1987), Catholic church music (organ with Ernst Triebel ), choral conducting and conducting in Graz . A special course in Gregorian palaeography and semiology took place in Essen . From 1982 to 1992 he was cathedral organist in Klagenfurt , and from 1982 to 1989 also church music consultant for the Gurk diocese . Since 1989 he has been professor for Gregorian chant at the University of Art in Graz . From 1999 to 2011 he was President of the International Working Group on Hymnology .

Praßl conducted the Gregorian chant at the Mass for the inauguration of Pope Francis , as he teaches Gregorian chant at the papal music academy, the Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra .

Franz Karl Praßl is co-editor of the two volumes of the Graduale Novum , the semi-official edition of the liturgical chants for the Roman Catholic mass , published in 2011 and 2018 . He published numerous publications on hymnology , Gregorian semiology, liturgy and church music history, especially of the 12th century. He is the founder and director of the Grazer Choralschola, with which he has undertaken numerous concert tours and produced recordings.
