The 2017/18 season was the 82nd season of the American Hockey League (AHL). During the regular season, which ran from October 6, 2017 to April 15, 2018, the 30 teams in the league played 76 or 68 matches. The Toronto Marlies won the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy as the best team of the regular season. Then the playoffs for the Calder Cup took place, which the Toronto Marlies also secured on June 14, 2018.
Changes
The Binghamton Senators moved to Belleville , Canada, and operate there as Belleville Senators . The void they left in Binghamton was filled directly by the Albany Devils , who now operate under the name Binghamton Devils . In addition, the second incarnation of St. John's IceCaps was dissolved after only two years and relocated to Laval to be closer to the NHL cooperation partner, the Canadiens de Montréal, as Rocket de Laval . All three teams remained in the North Division .
The Vegas Golden Knights as the 31st NHL franchise ensured that not every NHL team found a cooperation partner in the AHL. The Golden Knights entered into a cooperation with the Chicago Wolves , so that the St. Louis Blues remained without a farm team , but continued to send their players to Chicago in the 2017/18 season. In response, the AHL decided to tender a corresponding expansion to 31 teams for the 2018/19 season.
The Charlotte Checkers also moved from the Central Division of the Western Conference to the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference , so that both conferences now consist of 15 teams.

The mode corresponds to that introduced for the 2015/16 season .
