Mike McKenna (born April 11, 1983 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper . Between 2009 and 2019 he played 35 games for a total of seven teams in the National Hockey League , but was mostly used in their farm teams in the American Hockey League .
Career
McKenna played for the Springfield Junior Blues in the North American Hockey League between 1999 and 2001 during his junior years . In the summer of 2001, the goalkeeper finally went to St. Lawrence University to pursue a degree there. At the same time he played for the university ice hockey team in ECAC Hockey , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . McKenna stayed at the university for four years until the spring of 2005 and was selected during this time in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in the sixth round in 172nd place by the Nashville Predators .
The Predators did not take the option and took the goalkeeper under contract, so that he joined the Las Vegas Wranglers from the ECHL for the 2005/06 season and remained loyal for two years. During this time, his achievements also drew the attention of the higher-class franchises from the American Hockey League . Sporadically, he came to missions for the Norfolk Admirals , Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights and Milwaukee Admirals . At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , the American secured a one-year permanent commitment with the Portland Pirates from the AHL, where he immediately became a regular goalkeeper. Nevertheless, his contract was not renewed at the end of the season and McKenna rejoined the Norfolk Admirals. In February 2009, Norfolk's cooperation partner, the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League , decided to sign McKenna for the rest of the game year after both goalkeeper Mike Smith and his representative Olaf Kölzig were out injured for a long time. During the rest of the season until April, the goalkeeper, who shared the post with Karri Rämö , made 15 NHL appearances. In September 2009, the New Jersey Devils secured his services for the following season, which was prematurely extended for another year in February 2010. With the exception of two NHL appearances in the 2010/11 season , McKenna played exclusively for their farm teams , the Lowell Devils and Albany Devils .
In the following seasons McKenna was taken by the Ottawa Senators , St. Louis Blues , Columbus Blue Jackets and Arizona Coyotes each for a year, but came only for Columbus and Arizona to five more NHL missions. Otherwise, he stood between the posts for their farm teams Binghamton Senators , Peoria Rivermen , Springfield Falcons and Portland Pirates . For the 2015/16 season he moved to the Florida Panthers organization , which continued to run him up with the Portland Pirates. With the start of the 2016/17 season , McKenna was part of the new Panthers farm team, the Springfield Thunderbirds .
At the trade deadline on March 1, 2017, the Panthers gave him in exchange for Adam Wilcox to the Tampa Bay Lightning, for which he was already active in the 2008/09 season. In July 2017, he finally joined the Dallas Stars as a free agent after his contract was not renewed. Likewise, he joined the Ottawa Senators in July 2018 . In January 2019, however, the Americans gave them together with Tom Pyatt and a six- round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft to the Vancouver Canucks , while Anders Nilsson and Darren Archibald moved to Ottawa. The Canucks wanted to send McKenna directly to the AHL via the waiver , although his contract was taken over by the Philadelphia Flyers . There he ended the 2018/19 season and then declared his active career over.
