The 2005-06 season was the 70th regular season of the American Hockey League (AHL). The regular season began on October 5, 2005 and ended on April 16, 2006. During that time, the 27 teams in the league played 80 games each. The playoffs began on April 18th.
For the 70th anniversary of the AHL, the league announced the first new admissions to the new AHL Hall of Fame on January 6, 2006. The new additions were Johnny Bower , Jack Arlington Butterfield , Jody Gage , Fred Glover , Willie Marshall , Frank Mathers and Eddie Shore .
On February 1, 2006, the 19th AHL All-Star Classic took place, which was played between a Canadian All-Star team and the PlanetUSA team, consisting of US and international players. The venue was the MTS Center in Winnipeg , Manitoba . The Canadian All-Star Team won 21:12.
Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks went out of business and left the league until further notice.
- The Edmonton Road Runners went out of business and left the league until further notice.
- The Utah Grizzlies went out of business and left the league until further notice.
- The dormant Saint John Flames resumed their business and have been incorporated into the West Division as Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights .
- The dormant Louisville Panthers resumed their business and have been incorporated into the West Division as Iowa Stars .
- The St. John's Maple Leafs were relocated to Toronto , Ontario and renamed the Toronto Marlies .
- The Worcester IceCats were relocated to Peoria , Illinois and renamed the Peoria Rivermen . From now on you play in the West Division.
- The Albany River Rats were moved from the East Division to the Atlantic Division.
- The Grand Rapids Griffins were moved from the West Division to the North Division.
Rule changes
For the season, rule changes were made in the National Hockey League to make the game faster and, above all, with more goals, which were adopted by the AHL:
- The 2-line pass has been abolished.
- The area of goalkeeping equipment has been reduced.
- The neutral zone has been made smaller by about 120 centimeters (4 feet), with the goal line being moved 60 centimeters (2 feet) closer to the boards.
- Players who start a brawl in the last 5 minutes of the game will receive a game misconduct penalty, will be banned from the next game and the team will be fined.
- The referees are equipped with a headset to announce penalties etc. over the loudspeaker system in the stadium.
- Offenses such as hooks, cross checks and disabilities are punished more strictly.
- A team that causes an unauthorized long-range shot ( icing ) is not allowed to change players during the stoppage of the game. This is to prevent a team from provoking an icing in order to get an opportunity to change players.
- Any player who shoots the puck out of his own defensive zone without deflecting it over the plexiglass border will be punished with a game delay penalty.
